Fourteen new citizens were welcomed and received engraved Lions Club certificates of citizenship bearing the oath. The event included musical numbers by Evelyn Martin and a later club business session scheduling a Mt Gretna cottage gathering on August 13 with dinner at 7 p m.

New Catholic Church Construction Begins in New Holland
Work on St Marys Catholic Church in New Holland started after contractor C B Townsley and his crew moved on site at the corner of North Custer Avenue extension and Conestoga Street. The T shaped frame building will seat about 100 worshippers with a basement social hall for 150 to 175. planned stained glass windows, heating and lighting, and a front belfry. The Redemptorist Fathers of St Clements will preside from Ephrata with Rector Superior Mather Shearer. Architect G C Freeman of Reading designed the project which will include a priest and boys sacristy a sanctuary and front and rear exits.

Dr Barton M Winters 1854 1939 Dies At 85
Dr Barton M Winters a retired physician aged 85 formerly of Goodville died Monday at his daughter Susan Richwine’s home in Washington DC where he had lived for several years. Born December 11 1854 he practiced medicine in Goodville his whole life with his father and later with Dr Keeler and his brother John Seaman Winters. He studied at Millersville State Normal School and Jefferson Medical College graduating in 1877 and served as president of the New Hall association. Continued on page 4.

Walter Stager Dies After Long Legal Career
Walter Stager died yesterday morning at his daughter Mrs. John H. Shirk’s home on Oregon road after four years there. Born January 7, 1845 in New Holland, he lived in Sterling, Illinois from 1855 to 1936, graduated from the University of Michigan in 1868, and was admitted to the Illinois bar the same year. He served as City Attorney of Sterling and as Whiteside County State’s Attorney from 1880 to 1904.
