The Young Men's Business League met at Trinity Lutheran Parish House to vote a picnic for members and families at the New Holland Swimming Pool grounds with an indoor option if rain. A ten member committee led by George S. Good planned activities. The league will sponsor Victory News for armed forces members and heard a guest speech by T K Leinbath of Reading on good old days and the Declaration of Independence.

A candle left burning in an upstairs room started a blaze at the home of Mr and Mrs Hiam Smoker in Intercourse at 9 15 p m Monday. The Smokers were alerted by neighbors and saved the bed by tossing the scorched mattress out a window. mattress cover and other coverings burned. Intercourse firemen were called but not needed.

The Victory Band of New Holland under Floyd Reddig will perform at community events over the coming weeks. Mahton Martin Leaves Hospital After Barn Fall
Mahlon Martin of Groffdale, fifty nine, discharged from St. Joseph's Hospital where he had been a patient since July 8 after a fall in a barn. He suffered a fractured vertebrae and head and facial injuries. Dr. John M. Martin of Blue Ball treated him before ambulance transport.

Helmet Saved Him Defense of D Day Letter from France
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin L. tloow er of Groffdale New Holland writes from France on July 4 describing a D Day incident. He says a German 88 shell grazed his helmet and head but did not stop him, crediting his helmet with saving his life while serving in an infantry outfit.

Pfc Gilbert Gutekunst wounded in action in France and hospitalized in England after July 6. He entered service June 15 1942 with the 79th Infantry, overseas since April. John Henry Nolt, son of Ammon R Nolt Ephrat a R1, killed in action June 23 in New Guinea after training at Fort McClellan and Camp San Luis Obispo.
