Major E M F Weaver writes from the Pacific Battle Area describing a quieter Fourth of July and missing the old chaotic celebrations. He recalls past torpedo days and fireworks and notes America now holds safe and sane holidays. He hopes by next year loved ones will be home and the noise returns.

Major Wilson A. Foust of New Holland Pennsylvania has been assigned to the San Antonio Air Technical Service Command at Kelly Field Texas after overseas service in North Africa Sicily and Italy as a surgeon in the Air Corps. He holds the Mediterranean Theatre ribbon with three battle stars and the Distinguished Unit Citation.
At the local Rotary Club meeting, new president Leroy B. Herb named year long chairs for each service area. Appointments include D Robley Evans Club Service and Ivan A Shirk Program, with others for Attendance, Classification, Rotary Information, Vocational Service, International Service, and Community Service. Visitors H B Endslow W de Perret and W B Smith attended.

Eli N Hoover seventy three of New Holland R 1 died at 7 15 am after four months illness. He was a Graffdale Mennonite Church member and is survived by wife Ella Martin Hoover and children Hettie Susanna Aaron Paul Elam plus step-siblings and sixteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral from his home then Graffdale Mennonite Church with interment in the adjoining cemetery.
Frank Lehman of the York Mission will preach at Hinkletown Mennonite Church at 7 30 p m Sunday evening July 8.
Captain Leonard Levitt son of Mr and Mrs Abe Levitt of this borough arrived home for a 45day period of temporary duty from the Philippines. He served thirty four months overseas and earned the Arrow Head device two battle stars on both the Asiatic Pacific and Philippine Liberation ribbons and the Bronze Star Medal. After temporary duty he will report to Fort Dix New Jersey.
A two and a half story brick eight room dwelling with a two car garage in Blue Ball was sold at public sale Saturday to D. W. Geist of Blue Ball for 8570 dollars. The sale was held by Fannie M. Wenger of Blue Ball with Benjamin F. Weaver acting as auctioneer.
Hope Elizabeth Sheaffer daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank M Sheaffer and Irwin L Hurst son of Mr and Mrs Paul A Hurst were married in a 2 pm ceremony at New Holland United Brethren Church with Rev F C Aungst officiating. Attendants included Violet Sheaffer and John Rudy. Marian Frankhouser played the music. A reception followed at Mrs Elizabeth Woomert’s home in East New Holland. The couple left for a trip to Asbury Park New Jersey.
Aaron N. Rissler sixteen son of Daniel and Lizzie Rissler of Denver R1 fell twenty eight feet from a barn roof while painting near Muddy Creek Church. He died at Ephrata Community Hospital from skull injuries after lingering until Wednesday. Survived by parents maternal grandfather Isaac M Nolt and many siblings. Private funeral at home Saturday 1 pm and Weaverland Church 3 pm with interment in nearby cemetery.
Edwin C. Myers fifty six of 262 West Main street was admitted to St. Josephs Hospital on Friday after a car he drove struck a parked truck in Lincoln at 9 30 p m Thursday State Police report a severe tongue laceration chin laceration and a fractured rib Myers condition is listed as good The collision occurred as he traveled east on Route 322 and hit a truck owned by the John Weidman Coal Company of Ephrata parked in the towns west end
The Salisbury Township School board cut the tax rate from nine to eight mills for 1945 46 and elected Miss Martha Kling of Intercourse as music supervisor. The board also voted to electrify five one room schools and planned a special meeting to set the coming year's salary schedule.
The Loyal Workers Circle of King's Daughters will gather Tuesday at 2 00 p m on the lawn of St Stephen Reformed Church. Miss Anna W Harner will oversee bandage rolling and a picnic lunch will follow. Members are asked to bring a box lunch and linen for bandages. A large turnout is hoped.
Two children from the local Methodist Sunday School attend Camp Innabah near Spring City. J Harvey Shue spends one week and Janet Sweigart spends two weeks. Neil Coble of Lemoyne, Harvey's cousin, also attends for a week.
A tentative 1945 46 budget prepared by the New Holland School Board is open for inspection at Secretary John H. Martin's home on Railroad Avenue. The proposal carries a tax rate of 18 million property and $4.00 per capita and will be finally adopted on July 21.
The Ladies' Auxiliary of the Liberty Fire Company will hold their monthly meeting at the New Holland Swimming Pool on Wednesday evening July 11 at 6 p m. If it rains the meeting moves to the fire hall. The event features a covered-dish luncheon and Birthday Party. All members invited.
Mrs. Dorothy Martin of Crutch Town, Lester H. Martin, recently promoted to corporal, received the Bronze Star and Grand Conduct Medal though details are unavailable. He entered service as a volunteer and trained at Fort Knox, Los Angeles, Camp Bowie, and in the New England States. He served seventeen months overseas in France and Czechoslovakia, son of Moses Martin of New Holland R 2.
New York report states Mrs. Edna Diem, mother of Pfc. Very W. Diem, was awarded his Bronze Star Medal posthumously for actions in the Ruhr Pocket on April 14. Diem, of the 97th Regiment’s 3803rd Infantry, served in Europe with the 7th Division and helped push through key German targets including Siegburg and Solingen. The 97th Regiment trained at Camp Swift and other bases before shipping overseas.
Pvt. Robert E. Smith of Farmersville was commended by Lt. Gen. Lucian K. Truscott Jr. for meritorious duty with the 751st Tank Battalion in action near Corona, Italy from November 24 to 28, 1944. He arrived in South America recently from Italy, wife reports.
