Catherine M. Jenkins nears life’s end as family gathers around her. The six daughters are described, four wed ministers, including Elizabeth to Philip Wager Bigart of Lancaster and Martha to Dr. John W. Nevin, a noted Presbyterian theologian. Continued on Page 8.
The Christian Endeavor Societies of the local United Brethren Church announce special services for Christian Endeavor Week starting January 27. On Sunday at 10 15 a sermon by Rev F C Aungst will be followed by a talk from Clarence J Nelson and a choir selection. On February 5 Rev Percy Crawford of Philadelphia will speak in concert with his wife and a youth quartet.
Lancaster county students from Manheim Manor New Holland West Lampeter and Mount Joy join the first county contest under the Pennsylvania Forensic Music League. The event is slated before April 6 to allow winners to prepare for state competition.
Favorable reports reach the Clarion on M. G. Weaver local historian and Miles Martin both seriously ill in recent weeks.
New Holland area residents may donate 25 cents to be listed and wired to President Roosevelt. Proceeds split 70 percent local and 30 percent national for infantile paralysis research. Event set January 30 at Lancaster Moose Hall with tickets 1.10 dollars per couple or 55 cents single. Committee led by Wayne B. Ranck includes Miss Virginia Renninger, Prof. J. Allen Richards, Charles A. Mentzer and R. E. Whitmore.
Rev. C. D. Rabuck pastor of the Evangelical Congregational Church of Terre Hill spoke to the New Holland Lions Club on Tuesday evening. He cited outstanding Americans with vision and purpose and expressed optimism that America has a greater future as men with vision rise to meet the hour’s needs.
Lancaster county letters outline plans for a new Boy Scout Troop in Churchtown with Rev. M. Corwin Taylor as sponsor. Scout Executive C. B. Sanford and local leaders will meet February 2 to finalize arrangements with New Holland Scouters and Scouts invited to assist.
Liberty firemen answered an alarm Sunday afternoon at the W. M. Oberholtzer residence southwest of town only to find no fire. Smoke from a chimney near the roof looked like an incipient blaze. neighbors reported the alarm while the Oberholtzer family was away.
Officers elected at the recent Congregational meeting will be installed during the main service at Trinity Lutheran church. The chief service will start at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
In the 1870s and 1880, Beartown near the railroad hosted picnics and social events by local groups and a colored señora, Mrs John Thomas, evolving into religious and educational outings. The Evangelical Association held its first English camp meeting on the mountain from July 27 to August 5, 1880, with extensive preparations and arrangements for attendees.
Debs launches a nationwide effort using messenger boys to collect names for a massive birthday greeting to President Roosevelt. The Postal Telegraphs Company collects names at 25 cents each with proceeds aiding infantile paralysis research and relief.
Tragedy loomed in Caer narvon Township as a heavy snowstorm trapped a boy near Edwards Schoolhouse. David Smoker found and revived the exhausted child, saving him from likely death as blizzards closed roads across eastern Pennsylvania.
Mrs Ellen Mae Curley thirty eight wife of William B Curley of Reading died Monday morning in St Josephs hospital Reading after a lengthy illness She is survived by her husband one son Charles of Reading her parents Mr and Mrs William Styer of Fetterville and several brothers and sisters Services will be held at Lutz funeral home Reading this Friday at 1 00 PM Burial will be in Morgantown cemetery
Mrs Elizabeth S Weaver eighty nine widow of Isaac S Weaver died Wednesday at 1 30 p m at her home 612 North Lime Street Lancaster of infirmities of age Born near Terre Hill she was a daughter of the late John and Lavina Slaybach Bixler and had lived in Lancaster sixty years Her husband died in 1914 She was a member of Grace Lutheran church Continued on Page 4
Mr and Mrs Frank Boley of East Earl R D 1 marked their fifty six year union after marrying December 26 1878 in Fetterville by Rev Sweigart Evangelical minister He is 79 she 72 with seven children 35 grandchildren and three great grandchildren The couple live in East Earl where Mr Boley served as road supervisor for twenty five years.
Samuel S. Gerhart and family and Grant Esby and family of Fast Earl returned Friday after a week in Miami Florida.
The Business and Professional Women's Club met at Miss Anna Musselman's home. President Anna S. Diller announced the Lancaster banquet on February 7 with speaker Mrs. Geline Mac Donald Bowman. Dr H V Givler spoke on the local library project and reading habits. Next meeting will cover health with Dr J A Hoffman as speaker.
The Helping Hand class of Trinity Lutheran church met last Thursday evening at Mrs. W. A. Grants home. The gathering opened with a devotional, featured a solo by Mrs. John Mentzer, held a business session, another song by Mrs. Mentzer, and refreshments were served. Attendees included Mrs. Samuel Jacobs, president, and a list of members.
Miss Kathryn Lewis will hold a spelling bee at the Fire Hall in Goodville on Friday February 1 at 7 30 oclock. Three classes plus drills dialogues and pantomimes will be presented with proceeds for the school.

A wave of purchases by General Cigar Bayuk and P Lorillard along with local packers pressed forward after a storm delay. Highest prices reached 16 cents and 5 cents for a 15 acre Goodville crop bought by A K Mann. Numerous 3 to 16 acre parcels sold in Blue Ball and nearby towns to several buyers including Stoltzfus and Lapp, with several 14% and 3% receipts noted.
Gerald M. P. Fitzgibbon renowned hypnotist and psychologist will headline a Lions Club entertainment on Thursday January 31 at 8 p m in the High School Auditorium. Demonstrations of hypnotism are planned and local school children are assisting with ticket sales.
