President Franklin Delano Roosevelt took the oath of office in Washington in a heavy downpour, with about 200000 spectators. The ceremony marked the start of his second term, witnessed by many from the nation’s capital and surrounding sections.
Miss Maude Evans entertained the local Business and Professional Women’s Club on Monday. An invitation from the Lancaster Club to join their dinner Thursday January 21 at Hamilton Mews was extended. Speaker Miss Mary Denman, State Legislative chairman, will address the gathering. The library chair reported a new book titled An American Doctor’s Odyssey arriving soon, and a King James Bible designed for reading, arranged editorially and typographically by Ernest Sutherland Bates.
The Young Democratic Club of New Holland held a Friday night card party at the Legion Home. Prize winners included Amos Zuck, R. M. Kochel, Lee Martin, R. S. Schaeffer, Mary Good, M. W. Frankhouser, Clayton Sheaffer, Mrs. Park Dunlap, H. E. Herr, Mrs. Robert Witmer, Horace DeHaven, Treva Hacker, and Dorothy Zuck. Door prizes went to Ira Baer and Mrs. Robert Witmer with special prizes to John H. Martin, M. D. Good, and J. W. Good.
Applications for dog licenses have been received at the office of STYER & EVANS Real Estate and Insurance.
A two story Kinzer warehouse owned by E. E. Walker Feed Co. burned last Thursday, destroying the building and its contents valued at 13000. The blaze began about 9 am and cut electric service to nearby Gap and Christiana. Firefighters from multiple towns arrived too late to save the structure.
James Patterson of Woodbourne was a weekend guest of Rev. and Mrs. Frank Ulvich. Benjamin M. Brubaker of New Holland is among 71 students in an agricultural short course at Pennsylvania State College. Charles R Brown of the borough is among 32 men in two dairy manufacturing courses at the college. Donald and Mrs. Montgomery of Bloomsburg visited the Smiths. John Batsch and family visited Lehigh County. Charles Reifsnyder and others motored to Washington to witness the presidential inauguration.
Rev J Mumma hosts many visitors with gifts as prayer meeting nears. Rev D W Gerhard opens a vocal music class in the Sunday School room drawing many young learners. John Yost is found dead in a barn at the Styer House, likely after a fall. East Earl’s Martin Zimmerman sells personal property to raise stock and peanut farming. An illustrated Witwer Hall lecture covers Grant’s world tour Ten Nights in a Barroom and Garfield’s death. Charley Greene, aged eighty plus, dies from a horse kick. Flora Townsley Diehl 68 of Reading died Wednesday at St. Josephs Hospital Reading from complications after a four week illness. Daughter of Jacob H. and Lydia E. Townsley she was born in Reading and was a member of the Second Reformed church. Survived by son Harold at home two brothers Edgar D. Townsley of Ithaca N Y C B Townsley and Mrs William Gilfillan both of Reading and two grandchildren. Funeral Saturday at 11 from Miller's Funeral Parlors with interment in Charles Evans Cemetery Reading.
Mrs. Mary E Fiester Foster sixty wife of Harry S Foster of 1603 North 11th Street Reading died Thursday evening at her home from a complication of diseases She leaves husband a daughter Elmina wife of Harry Love at home a son Paul F at home one granddaughter and several siblings Funeral services were held Monday at 1 PM at the Reading home and Paradise Presbyterian Church with burial in the Paradise Presbyterian cemetery Lancaster County

William Jacobs eighty formerly of Cambridge Chester county died at Lancaster County hospital Sunday evening at 730. Survived by children Samuel Anna Lydia wife of William Ellis and William also sister Annie Jacobs Columbus Ohio and brother Samuel Jacobs New Holland R I. Services held Tuesday at Esbenshade funeral parlors New Holland. Interment in United Brethren cemetery.
Mr and Mrs Michael Waid of this borough announce the birth of a daughter at 9 18 p m Tuesday at Lancaster General hospital.
New Holland Lions Club presents a modern minstrel show at the High School auditorium next Thursday and Friday January 28 and 29. Prof William Burley directs with J Paul Kochel Harry Ressler and others in a revival of classic formats with an orchestra and a star cast led by C W Richmond as Master of Ceremonies and a group of Knights of the Round Table.
The Unemployment Compensation Office led by S. S. Bard explains unemployment benefits are not jobs. The plan protects workers who lose steady employment for short periods and sets eligibility rules including base earnings, work registration, availability, and a waiting period.
A wagon and two automobiles were damaged in a collision on the New Holland pike about a quarter mile west of New Holland at 11 35 am Sunday. No one was hurt. Aaron L Groff tried to pass and skidded into Richard Grant Jr's car, according to Corporal Aumon.
A moon decorated Schnupp grandfather clock brought 185 dollars at a local sale held on the premises. Rachael Schnupp of East New Holland offered it with other personal property. Real estate went to Samuel Seldomridge of East Earl for 33 330.
Bishop C H Mengel of Allentown will preach the morning sermon at Bridgeville Evangelical Congregational Church on Sunday January 24 at 10:80. In the afternoon at 2:80 he will deliver the sermon at Mt Curmen Evangelical Congregational Church. Rev Amos Groff pastors both churches.
The Lancaster County Federation of Men's Bible Classes executive committee met at Nevin H. Hillegass's Leola home and planned a dinner for February 15 at Broad Street Methodist Episcopal Church. A pageant titled Peace was discussed along with rallies at Salem Reformed on April 4 and Chestnut Level Presbyterian on May 16. Attendees included Nevin H. Hillegass and others such as Calvin J. Rehn and John W. Watson.
The Constant Workers' Class of Trinity Lutheran Sunday school met in the Parish house with hostesses Mrs. Reuben Sweigart and Mrs. Earl Shirk. Attendees included many named members. the next meeting is February 8 as a covered dish luncheon in the Parish House.

The Liberty Fire Company will hold a bingo party in the fire company hall next Thursday evening January 28 starting at 7:80 o clock.
Lancaster county Christian Endeavor Union plans a week long program February 5 to 11 to inspire youth in spiritual life and church fellowship. Warren G Hoopes of the Pennsylvania Christian Endeavor Union will address meetings across the county with additional speakers and activities scheduled at various churches and colleges including Elizabethtown College and Mt Joy Church of God.
A meeting is set for January 26 at 7 30 PM in the Farmers National Bank basement to discuss reviving the New Holland Athletic Association and joining the Lebanon Valley Baseball League. Prospective roster includes local towns and Reading area players with a 2 game schedule and enclosure for parks. Admission would be 25 cents to the park and 10 cents for grandstand seats.
Rev Frank Ulrich pastor of Trinity Lutheran church will broadcast Thursday morning January 28 at 10 over Station WGAL. Music will be provided by Charles Laukhutt tenor soloist and Helen Stoeck organist from Trinity Church.
The Young People's Department hosts a turkey supper in the church social rooms on Saturday February 6 at 4 p.m. Supper takeouts are requested only for invalids and shut ins.
