Obituaries report Rupert Haldeman dying after a long illness at 61 with wife in critical condition and multiple children surviving. also Harriet A. McGinnes dying at 55 with extensive family survivors. Emma Rigg dying at 40. Jesse Sellers 74 with stroke. Clarence R. Leaman born 1912 died in hospital after peritonitis. Funeral details follow.
Despite disagreeable weather a good attendance attended the Friday Evening Club dance at Harner's Theatre. The next dance is scheduled for Friday evening January 21 with music to be provided.
Dr Samuel Arlen Zell longtime dentist and Democrat resident of this borough died at his East Main street home Monday evening at 10 o clock after a yearlong illness. He was 74 and survived by one brother Dr D D Zell a son Harry and two grandchildren Wellington and Vera Pearson. Funeral services were held at his home and interment followed at Bergstrasse Lutheran cemetery.
Rebecca Z Huyard wed Noah H Fisher on January 18 at the Huyard home. Bishop John Beiler performed the ceremony with Jonas Smucker leading worship. About 180 guests attended meals and singing followed by evening games. The couple received many gifts and well wishes for a prosperous life.
Bareville area hosted a large wedding reception Saturday January 15 honoring Melvin Oberholtzer and Miss Suey Stauffer. About 60 to 70 relatives and friends attended with music by The Louder Bros. and wives. A guest list highlighted many Oberholtzer and Stauffer relatives from Neffsville Lititz Oregon and Philadelphia. A formal dinner and entertainment for children completed the merriment.
A melodramatic production titled The House of the Tolling Bell stars May Avoy and Bruce Gordon at Hamter's Theatre tonight. The drama blends love and mystery set in the old South with themes of superstition among both Black and white communities.
The Educational Service Committee of the Y M C A allocates six thousand dollars in free scholarships for ex soldiers in Lancaster City and County. A meeting on Friday January 2054 will finalize disbursements across the district. Members span the county and include Prof B W Fisher Lieut W Wickersham Rev Howard Obald and other notable local figures.
Reuben Zimmerman aged 19 son of Isaac Zimmerman of near Terre Hill narrowly escaped death Friday afternoon at John Martins mill near Martindale. His coat caught in a revolving shaft then hurled him to a cob crusher. He suffered a broken jaw in two places and body bruises. He was treated by Dr J W Royer at Terra Hill and moved to General Hospital. The report also covers tobacco price debates and farmer resistance to low wrappers prices in 1920 Lancaster County.
A grand spelling bee will be held at Cedar Grove school East Earl township with Miss Edna Eby, teacher, on Thursday evening January 27. The program includes two spelling classes recitations dialogues readings drills and music. If weather is unfavorable the event will move to Friday evening.
Four Saturday nights from February 12 Lincoln's birthday to March 6 present the Fire Company's fair in Harner's Theatre. Committee urges united community support for the big event to benefit home safety and protect properties and surroundings.
The annual Farmers Institute, run by the State Department of Agriculture with the Lancaster County Farm Bureau, will be at Blue Ball on Friday February 4. Sessions begin at 1:30 in the afternoon and again in the evening with speeches by prominent state figures on agricultural topics. Aimed at farmers, the event urges attendance for both sessions and promises a full program in next week's Clarion.
The Lancaster County Mennonite community lists reorganized Sunday schools for the year across Weaverland Lichtys Goodville Churchtown New Holland Graffdale Metzlers Hershey White Horse Red Well Welsh Mountain Martindale and more. It notes leaders, secretaries, treasurers, and choristers with a history noting 30 years ago only fifteen such schools existed in the Lancaster Conference and highlights pioneer workers Bishop Jacob N Brubaker Amos Herr and early schools in Rapho Willow Street Strasburg and New Providence.
Mrs. Andrew Burkholder and family spent Friday near town and visited in Lancaster. Numerous locals travel to Wilmington Baltimore and Philadelphia to see friends. Mrs. Annie Mason returns from a week with the Dillers in Ephrata and Mr. and Mrs. George Marshall visit P R Wentz in Philadelphia. Several families gather for Saturday and Sunday visits across Easton Five Points Mechanicsburg and Farmersville.
The Teachers District Institute for New Holland district, fixed for Saturday January 22, has been postponed to Saturday January 29. Details to follow next week. Ice storage opportunity and skating on the dees offered this week.
The Franklin and Marshall Glee Club from Lancaster will perform at Harners Theatre on Tuesday evening January 25 at 8 o'clock. The program, praised as in past years, supports the Boy Scouts with proceeds funding better equipment and a troop house. Under W Allen Hammond the group aims to surpass last year and earn strong local patronage.
