John H. Houck, a Red Well resident, was found dead by the roadside near Summitville on Monday evening. The inquest ruled death from natural causes likely due to heart trouble, with Houck having set out early to visit his brother in Green Bank and failing to return home. He was 63, a Civil War veteran, Mennonite, and survived by his wife and four daughters and a son. funeral held at Red Well Mennonite church. The report also notes a postponement of the William M. Matt murder case to the April term following death of lead counsel Major Reinoehl.
A candidate, Wenger Groff, withdraws from nomination for assessor in Env Township's Republican primary. With Groff out, M. W. Diyler leads the field for the assessor post. Remaining contests include Supervisor with four candidates, School Director with three, and Martindale district assessor with two candidates.
Mr and Mrs William Kinzer of this borough mourn the death of their nine month old infant daughter Elia Elizabeth after about a week of illness with pneumonia. The loss draws sympathy from many friends as the child was a twin with the surviving twin. A Lancaster postmaster nomination is noted with S Brosius recommending 8. Clay Miller to the Senate for appointment.
Mr Miller, a wholesale liquor dealer and respected businessman, is expected to take charge of the office on February 1 following the death of Major Reinochl. He served 3.5 years in the Union army with Company TE, 6th Pennsylvania, was wounded four times and awarded a medal by Major General Gilmore for gallantry as color sergeant.
The New Holland Ww. T. U met at Mrs Geo Nl Ranek s home. Mrs A HE Roland stood in as secretary pro tem. Members reviewed New Century leaflets on alcohol effects and discussed fundraising for the county treasury. The next meeting will focus on Purity.
Revival services begin Sunday evening at the United Brethren church in the borough and continue each evening except Saturday evening. Further notice will follow.
The patient, AJM Weaver of Kase Karl, is recovering from a severe typhoid attack and can walk again though still weak with poor appetite. He remains slowly regaining strength after about eight weeks of illness.
The Loyal Temperance Legion met at Mrs. M A Elershey's home on Saturday afternoon. The session began with songs “We'll Never Touch the Wine” and “the Children’s Sabbath.” Mrs. Hershey read Psalm 43:1 and all prayed. Anna Jacobs read poems and recited pieces. Florence Barr offered a sentiment and the meeting closed with “Our Coming Army.”
A Mount Joy borough school board special meeting voted to close public schools for one week due to a diphtheria epidemic. Eleven new cases were reported to the health board as schools have now shut twice this term after a prior two week closure in November.

Motormen and conductors of the United Traction Company of Reading resume service after a week long walkout to gain reinstatement, higher wages, and union recognition. An arbitration board orders reinstatement of all discharged workers since January 1, set wages at 63 1/2 cents per hour from January 16, 1901, nine hours per day, and one week shift adjustments. Disputes to go to arbitration if unresolved by company and employees.
The Conestoga below Lancaster runs so low that most flow is diverted to the race feeding Lancaster Electric Light and Power. Thousands of fish move to deeper water, die from suffocation near the race wheels, and must be scooped out daily to maintain flow. In two months three to four tons have been removed, risking local fish supplies and community health.
In Honeybrook Tuesday afternoon Rev George B Kerr was installed as pastor of the Presbyterian church with Rev John B Rendell of Lincoln University presiding and Rev Dr Carr Islno of Lincoln delivering the sermon. Other officiating clergy included Revs Hector A McLean of Brandywine Manor and Thomas Ry McDowell of Upper Ovtorara.
Creditor of J A Martin of Lancaster filed a petition in the United States court to have him declared bankrupt. The court appointed Landis Levan as receiver.
Receiver Levan Enver filed a bond of 814 000 and took possession of the assets of High and Martin after creditors deemed an earlier merit unsatisfactory.
A Saturday January 26 institute in the New Hale land district will meet in the secondary school room due to lack of a suitable hall. The program includes devotional, papers on arithmetic and instruction, discussions, music, and an address by County Superintendent Brecht, with sessions led by local teachers and the Misses Townsley and Brubaker.
Wayne Il Cooper of West Wart towns ship made an assignment to M G Sneater esq of Lanc Easter for the benefit of his creditors.
