At a late hour guests from Philadelphia, Lancaster, Gordonville, Paradise, Gap, White Horse, Blue Ball, New Holland, Bareville, Mechanicsburg, Leola and nearby towns attended a surprise party for Miss Esbenshade. The gathering included attendees from numerous local communities as they bid her well and hope for similar future occasions.
With temperatures near freezing and snow and sea covering the land coal demand outstrips supply. Dealers report backlogs as carloads arrive and long lines form at yards in the borough. Residents scramble for limited allotments, fearing hardship as coal becomes scarce.
The Republican primary for borough officers will be held at A. G. Miller’s Eagle hotel this borough on Thursday January between 3 and 7 p m to nominate candidates for judge and inspector of elections two school directors burgess two town council members tax collector and auditors for three and one year. Candidates must file by Monday evening January 26. A meeting at 7 30 p m Monday January 26 at the Eagle hotel will elect officers and address matters. Republicans are invited to attend.
United States Commissioner Owen P Brisker held a continued hearing on the charge of robbing the postoffice at New Holland for John Lippincott Albert Dunlap and J Milton Fryberger. No further testimony was taken and the case was returned to the United States district court. Dunlap and Fryberger posted bail of 600 each while Lippincott was committed in default of bail.
Revival services are in progress at the United Brethren church led by Rev. C.A. Muteh. The pastor conducts evening services this week and plans to continue for several weeks with daily sessions except Saturday evenings.
An advertisement extols Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription to improve womanly health by establishing regularity and treating drains inflammation and ulceration. The copy cites testimonies from Miss M. Fyfe and others, claiming restoration of health after years of illness, and touts privacy in correspondence and the Pleasant Pellets for congestion.
Rev A Steinhaeuser of Trinity Lutheran surprised his congregation by resigning to become assistant pastor at St Michael Lutheran in Allentown. He preached Sunday then notified his church council and agreed to a congregational vote. The resignation takes effect after the last Sunday in February. A committee will seek a replacement pastor.
Early morning incident on Luther avenue near Marin street left Michael Wolf injured slightly after Eli M. Martin’s horse struck him. Martin rendered aid, sent for Dr Hoff man, while Wolf, though badly beaten, is not severely hurt. A Friday afternoon freight wreck on the Downingtown and Lancaster branch at Greenfield caused a spread rail. Four cars and a cabin were wrecked with no injuries. the track was torn up for some distance, delaying travel for hours before wreckers arrived.
Prof Harrington of York completed his first vocal music class in the borough with a delightful concert. He now conducts a second class numbering about forty learners, reflecting strong local interest in vocal culture.
Sunday snow reached four inches then rain in the afternoon. Night brought freezing, forming a solid bed on the slick ground. Sleighing has been good all week as Bishop O. O. McCabe of Omaha visited Styer House for breakfast with the Davises and DeHaven family before heading to Lancaster toward Lewistown to dedicate a church. The bishop has recently arrived.
Been elected chancellor of the American University at Washington D C to succeed Bishop John F E Slurst who resigned owing to impaired health.
Harry Hoover, formerly of Salisbury township, Philadelphia, a Pennsylvania Railroad brakeman, was killed while coupling cars at Forty fourth street and Girard avenue. Ice caused him to slip and he was struck by moving cars, dying instantly. He was 32 or 33, unmarried, son of Samuel Hoover and grandson of Lewis Diller. Survived by three brothers and three sisters. Remains taken to borough, funeral at Trinity Lutheran Church led by Rev. A Steinhaeuser. Burial in Lutheran cemetery.
Coroner N. Witmer announced Friday the appointment of deputies for the county section. The Post Office Department orders postmasters to census all rural free delivery patrons and post the names with their route numbers for public viewing. Carriers work on lists but face neglect and indifference from patrons in supplying household names.
Lancaster event marks the seventy fifth anniversary of Trinity Lutheran Church with all day services on Sunday February 15. Former pastors Rev G F KroteL DD LL D Rev Samuel Laird DD and Rev Charles L Fry will preach sermons. A special musical program will be provided under the direction of Prof Clarence McHase.
The Mennonite evangelist John Weaver will preach Tuesday evening in the Methodist Episcopal church in this borough. The public is invited to attend a sample talk and hear his message.
