Thieves broke into Barry Zimmerman’s private farm garage near Goodville on Christmas Eve or morning and stole Elmer Zimmerman’s 1933 Ford V-8 touring car used as drayage. They took three new tires with wheels, a truck tire, paint, oil and tools. police were notified at about 10:00 Christmas morning and are investigating.
Mennonite Sunday school in the borough held the annual reorganizational meeting. Officers chosen include Martin G. Weaver as Superintendent Mahlon Witmer as assistant superintendent Aaron Hess as secretary Spencer Musser as treasurer Clarence Rutt as chorister Levi A. Weaver as assistant chorister and Elizabeth Wenger as librarian. Teachers were reappointed by the superintendent.
St Stephen Reformed church overflowed for the Christmas Eve vigil as the Young People’s Department staged the pageant Why the Chimes Rang. The service used candle light and followed the 11 o’clock program. Morning services included a Santa Claus gift presentation for children.
Members of Boy Scout Troop No. 1 in the borough presented Scoutmaster Leon Smith with a gift at the regular meeting last Thursday in the school house to thank him for his service during the year. The group also decided to abandon plans for the winter camp due to scarlet fever in the vicinity of the Scout cabin.
Twenty one men have been appointed to manage and staff five state liquor stores slated for Lancaster city and county. The Lancaster store on East King Street will employ a manager Bruce H Fahs and seven staff including Paul W Smith and six clerks. The Ephrata store will be led by John R Eshleman with staff Harry Winters and Lawrence Smith. Remaining stores in Manheim Columbia and a second Lancaster site will be announced this week with salaries for managers from 1860 to 2400 dollars. Eshleman, once a schoolteacher, has a varied career in farming machinery and sales.
The Ladies Auxiliary of the Liberty Fire Company in this borough will hold their regular meeting next Thursday evening January 4 at 7 30 o clock. All members are urged to be present.
Snow and cold gripped New York and New England as ice harvests and skating thrived. Eckert Richwine’s team caused a sleigh crash while a slaughtering outfit was loaded. Churches held services and gifts distribution, with the Reformed church cantata Emanuel drawing a large crowd despite bad weather. A nighttime snowfall turned to drizzle indoors for many.
A decade past reports a large Christmas crowd at the Community sing held on school grounds after church services. Early morning songs by over fifty choir members walked through the borough, followed by cheerful services. a few accidents marred the holiday.
Frank Ix and Sons Inc plan to expand the local Silk Mill by equipping part of the plant for a throw mill to create hundreds of jobs. The project hinges on mortgage bonds sold to local investors with six percent interest, secured by mill property. A public meeting at the Silk Mill on January 3 at 7 30 p m will explain the plan and seek support from Citizens Committee members and investors.
Mrs Amanda B Shaub Wenger 35 died Tuesday night in St Josephs hospital from complications. Wife of Amos Wenger she leaves children Sara Arthur Esther Frank Mary and Anna at home. Survived by her parents Phares and Mrs Shaub of Ephrata R D 4 and siblings Samuel Christ Mrs Milton Good Mrs Weaver Aucker and Mrs Ammon Aucker. Services at parents home then Pike Mennonite Church at 1 30 pm with burial in adjoining cemetery.
Mrs Emma Laura Styer, 40, wife of Walter Styer of near Churchtown, died at home Monday at 7 a.m. after a ten year illness. She is survived by two sons Raymond and Donald, her mother Florence Weaver, two brothers and two sisters. Private services were held at the home Thursday at 1 30 p.m. with public services at 2 p.m. at Churchtown Methodist Episcopal church. Interment followed in the adjoining cemetery.
Mrs. Ella Bear wife of P Winton Bear of Bareville died Saturday in Lancaster General Hospital after a three day illness due to complications. She was a member of the New Holland United Brethren church and is survived by her husband two daughters Cora Darlington and Nellie Heller twelve siblings. Funeral services were held at the home then at the New Holland United Brethren church with burial.
Harry Irons a 15 year old son of Mr and Mrs Sydney Irons is confined to his home with what may be a slight concussion after a coasting accident on Brimmer Avenue hill on Thursday afternoon. He was bumped on the head by another coaster as they jumped over riders coming down.
Local notices list numerous Christmas gatherings. Residents from Smoke Town to Lebanon Valley College share celebrations with relatives in Lancaster, Millersville, Lebanon and Philadelphia. Several students and workers spend holidays with parents, while others recover from illness at home.

The marriage of Amy Martin daughter of Bishop Abram L Martin of Intercourse to Menno L Hess Jr son of Mr and Mrs Menno L Hess of Florin was solemnized Tuesday at 10 30 am at the bride's home. Bishop Martin officiated and Miss Sue Denlinger and Jay Martin attended. A wedding dinner followed for about fifty guests.
Eli K. Stauffer of New Holland and Miriam F E Bressler of near Churchtown were married at the bride’s home Sunday evening at 6 o’clock by Rev. A W Leibensperger of Ephrata in the presence of immediate families.
Calvin W. Weitzel of Hopeland and Helen Mae Treisch of Reams town wed Paul M. Hufford of Barenville and Anna L. Mertz of Lancaster in a Saturday afternoon ceremony at 4 o’clock officiated by Rev. N. S. Fake. The couples planned a Washington D C trip before settling. Weitzels reside with the bridegroom’s parents and Huffords will live in Akron.

The engagement of Miss Ruth M. Dierson daughter of Mrs. Joseph T. Dierson of 555 West King Street Lancaster to Henry S. Rutter son of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Rutter of East Main Street was announced shortly before the holidays.

Exam after January 5 1934 with admission cards mailed after applications close. Salary last year was 825. Applicants aged 21 to 64 must reside in the office territory and be U S citizens.
The Westminster Guild Circle of Cedar Grove Presbyterian church will meet at the home of Miss Doris Steltz Saturday afternoon December 30 at 2 o clock. Roll call answers with a verse from Ezra. The Lancaster County Egg Auction yesterday saw eggs sell up to 28 cents a dozen. Buyers included city officials and local merchants in a brisk, small-town market event.
