The Holland schools will open next Monday morning for a nine month term. The board has made improvements and provided books and supplies. Parents are urged to send children on time for regular attendance and orderly conduct to ensure smooth, progressive learning.
Martin died from injuries after a farm accident at the Nott farm near Vogntown on Tuesday. He aged about 40 years and died at Lancaster General Hospital. Funeral arrangements were announced with private services at 1 30 PM and public services at Groffdate Mennonite Church at 2 PM followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery. He is survived by his wife Lizzie Nott and six children, plus numerous siblings.
Fire destroyed a large barn on Samuel Newt's farm in Upper Leacock on the preceding Friday morning. A hot box at the separator caused the blaze, spreading to hay, wheat, and a straw stack. Water from springs and nearby engines aided containment. the loss exceeds 10,000 with no insurance. Fire crews from multiple towns assisted. no injuries reported.
Harry S Ranck and Pearl Myer both of New Holland were married Saturday evening by Rev D G Glass at Faith Reformed Church Lancaster. The couple had two attendants and left for a short wedding trip. The bride is daughter of Mr and Mrs George Ranck formerly of New Holland. Groom works in the silk mill of Storb Snider and Co. They will reside in New Holland after a brief wedding trip.
M B Masrachti former secretary of Mayor Kennedy of Lancaster, fled from Lancaster for forgery. He was captured in New York and brought back to Lancaster. He pleaded guilty to forging his mother’s name on notes totaling 1800 dollars and received a three year sentence in the county jail. He will be kept in confinement after prison term begins.
The Union picnic of Sunday School in New Holland and vicinity was agreed as a grand success and enjoyed by everyone. The committee praised efficient parking that allowed easy exit for all, with motto a better picnic every year.
Work on the new Mennonite church under construction on North Roberts avenue corner is progressing favorably. Bricklayers raise outside walls now halfway to window height. Basement walls use concrete blocks three courses high. main room floor will rise about a foot at the entrance so rear seats sit higher than the front.
A notice informs friends and the public that the Enterprise Telephone and Telegraph Building in New Holland opposite the Ragle Hotel will open today offering a choice of rooms.
The statement for the period ending July 30, 1921 lists figures for New Holland Building and Loan Association of New Holland Penna. The amount specified is 43404.84 dollars.
The Fuoter family gathered for their annual reunion at W Linton Fuoter’s home in Green Hill Pa on the last Saturday of July. Attendees came by auto and train for a midday basket luncheon beneath apple trees followed by a business meeting led by Stephen L Fuoter. Entertainment featured Marguerite and Janet Sterling singing and recitations by Amanda Fuoter Evelyn Wise Margaret Perry and Elizabeth Fuoter, with an impromptu track meet and prize events including Edwin Wise winning a toy bulldog Anna Diller an egg beater and Robert Rock a men’s race prize. Refreshments later served as autos departed for the railroad station with attendees asserting the 1921 reunion the best yet. Participants listed include Laura L Appleton Wilhelmina Ross Jeremiah Fuoter Hannah M Fuoter Marion E Fuoter Stephen L Fuoter Bila Fuoter Edwin Krautheim and many others from Philadelphia Honey Brook Gap Ner von Vine land Narvon Intercourse and surrounding areas.
The Liberty Fire Company of New Holland requests that during an out of town fire the siren be blown three times as a signal that the blaze is not in town. The siren should sound immediately upon telephone call without waiting for orders.
In this issue the conclusion of Rev. C E Rettews letters from China is printed with the promise of more installments. Rettew, formerly of this borough, is a keen observer who has already shared insights on Japan and China, promising further interesting and informative content.
Elmer Clayton Hurst age three, son of Elmer K and Katie Hurst, residing near Adamstown in Brecknock township Berks county, drowned Thursday afternoon in Muddy Creek half a mile south of Adamstown. He and his six year old brother were playing by the stream when the bucket they carried slipped and he fell in. The current was strong as witnesses described.
The Lancaster County W C T U convened its annual meeting with 5 county officers 1 branch secretary 2 Message Staff 17 local presidents 14 county superintendents and 45 delegates. They reported 236 members and over 300 honorary members, totaling 1900, with all old officers reappointed except the recording secretary who declined.
Miss Many F Weaver returns from New York while Miss Grace Rishel comes back from Harrisburg. Many others visit family in Ephrata Morgantown Mt Gretna Atlantic City and Lancaster with relatives and friends. The roster lists Rev G Arthur Fry and kin, Mrs Cecilia McCreary and others spending time away and returning home.
