An infant in Westport Connecticut recently died after sucking on a green rail kept by the nurse. The note recalls a similar rural sports lament from an Illinois paper about prairie fowls and hunting prospects.
The writer commends the carrier known as Tom Pisely for delivering papers between a unnamed place and Evansville. The note highlights his timely dependable service and willingness to fix mail system defects, thanking Ife for providing papers to readers.
The paper notes two proclamations this week: one by the Governor urging contributions to aid victims of the State Fair explosion and another by the President calling for a general day of thanksgiving. It also reports a lengthy campaign ahead with offices to be filled and a January convention to test Democratic arguments.
A Salem observer suggests raising the sea bed by 180 feet at Behring Straits to connect Asia and America by dry land. The note playfully invites enterprising Yankees to devise a plan to elevate the bottom and unite the continents, offering subscriptions as incentive.
Election results from Ohio and Pennsylvania appear tight with Republicans claiming leads in Columbus and Philadelphia while Democrats contest outcomes. Reports note pendulum shifts from last year, reform ticket gains in Hamilton County, and calls for mail facilities improvement as voters await official tallies.
Latest figures show Pennsylvania with a Republican majority near 4,000 and Ohio carrying a Republican lead by about 10,000 for Ayes. Town results show roughly 35,000 in favor, with a 4 vote legislature majority on joint ballot. Defeated, but not conquered, the efforts persist.

A collage of clipped lines reflecting rural life and social mores. Includes a slave dialect exchange about feeding pigs and counting them, observations on virtue and beauty, and brief maxims on friendship, smell, physiognomy, and vacation service.
A section warns against evaporating water with stoves as unhealthy and damp, citing Dr B C Marcy. The page also prints a Hartford seance exchange about a widow and her late husband and a quip on how to get a country seat by sitting in the suburbs.
