Early settlement of New Harmony and vicinity begins with John Gresham
The record notes John Gresham as the first white settler opening a farm near present New Harmony. On October 1, 1807, he entered the southwest quarter of section 31, township 4, south range 13 west, in range 13. The tract spanned about 288 acres, including part of Tom Pete’s land and bordered by L. Pelham’s brick dwelling. By 1810 Gresham had a substantial farm and leased land to Wright Stallings, who arrived from North Carolina. Additional entries include Lewis Allen in 1809 securing the northwest quarter of section 32, now Henry Schnee’s, and notes on settlement patterns favoring hills with spring water.
