Amity Steamboat Trip From New Harmony to Grayville
A New Harmony correspondent recounts a spring 1835 pleasure voyage of the steamboat Amity to Grayville, Ill. The pump failed twice, water ran low, and crews bucket-filled the boiler. After hours of delay, the craft reached Grayville near midnight, then returned 30 miles to New Harmony after a hungry voyage and a corn-crib snack. A Prussian youth, John Preaus, was rescued from a gullied ditch with rope assistance. The return journey ended noon the next day with a barrel of beer providing sustenance for a dominant party aboard.
