Insect Plague Hits Wheat Across Indiana and Illinois
Reports from Gibson County to Knox County detail a small green grain aphid infesting wheat and rye. Entomologists note the pest is widespread, damages young grain, and lacks a practical field remedy though heavy rains and natural predators help curb its spread.

Water Melons Hit Hard by Cold in Gibson and Posey
The Princeton Clarion reports severe melon crop damage in Gibson county with estimates ranging from half to two thirds lost and some claiming up to eighty percent dead. Posey county also sustains bad losses though not as grave. The melon trade supports farmers more than wheat in these regions, with vines delayed by the cold snap and clover crops noted as immense.

River flood rises threaten crops as rains persist
The river rose rapidly through Sunday and Tuesday, gaining nearly five feet by Tuesday evening and eight inches in the 24 hours before, flooding low corn and thousands of acres. Hazleton and Terre Haute dispatches were discouraging, farmers prepared to save stock, and more rain kept the outlook grim for crops. The Ohio river backed up to the Chain, aiding the flood, while a ferry was blocked by drift. A circumcision ceremony occurred last Tuesday in New Harmony, witnessed by relatives from Evansville and Vincennes. Rumors say G S Green may seek the Democratic nomination for State auditor next year, a popular official seen as strengthening the ticket locally.

Fire Alarm Stuns New Harmony as Mumford Stable Burns
A fire alarm sounded at 2 30 Wednesday after the stable of T Mumford Jr caught fire and threatened a major blaze. The rapid spread to nearby buildings, aided by scant wind, was checked after two hours of strenuous work with help from the Duclos engine and local crews. Ladies aided water supply from wells and cisterns, limiting losses to about 600 dollars. The fire confined to the stable, woodshed and ice-house, despite proximity to combustibles. A separate incident injured Windham while stopping a raft last Saturday near the railroad track. Mercury baseball club of Grayville lost 14 to 10 to New Harmony’s pick-up nine. Wheat harvest will begin soon.
