The column previews the Posey county fair in New Harmony nine weeks away and notes light Fourth of July celebrations. It reports limited fireworks, a few livestock issues, drought impact on blackberry crops, local politics and party lines, and comments on population estimates and tariff debates.
A long list of residents and visitors from Evansville Grayville Mt Vernon and nearby towns visited or were guests here this week and on the 4th. Names include Winnie James Lizzie James Carrie Conant Alice Wissinger Bessie Bennett Minnie Rbeio Stella Read and many others.
Seven entries contested the clay pigeon event at the fairground last Friday at 18 yards rise. Results show Wiley with 9, Beal, Bennett, Hun gate, and Stone scored various totals with 55 of 105 birds broken, just over half. Henry Brown advertises spring hats and caps and stiff hats.
Town council met in regular session with members Johnson Duclos Rawlings Mann Trethewey present. Vincennes firm Owen family contracted to erect a fine marble monument for Col Richard Owen and eleven more for nearby New Harmony while Schreiber’s firm has already built five family monuments in Evansville including a granite piece for ROFP Schor at the 1st National Bank. local praise follows as the work gains recognition throughout the area. The notice also covers Chamberlain’s Colic Remedy endorsements, theater and vaudeville show highlights, local sales, a traction accident update, clothing ads, river levels, and a wheat harvest report from 140 acres yielding over 2,000 bushels.
