Democrats at War in Indiana House Split Over Governor Control
From the State Capital reports 873 bills filed to Saturday night with only about 50 acted on. Democrats are split on giving the governor control of state institutions, with a faction bolting to back a Republican gerrymander. Senate control keeps the balance. Hoops skirt bill ridiculed, and state expenditures cut in the general appropriation bill.

President backs annexation scheme with costly royal pensions
Washington dispatch notes the president’s fast tracked annexation treaty for Hawaii with a $20,000 annual pension for a queen and a $150,000 lump sum for a self styled princess. It cites Democratic senate risks and analyzes party balance as North Dakota's win gives a rare earthquake shift while Wyoming’s voters face leadership turmoil.

Fire destroys Hudnut hominy mill in Mt Vernon blaze
The Hudnut hominy mill in Mt Vernon was wiped out by fire between 5 and 6 this morning. The blaze consumed the main buildings, crib stock, a steamboat barge, grits, and about 15,000 bushels of corn. Wind drove embers toward the river, saving much of the city from greater damage. Loss estimates range from 75,000 to 100,000 dollars with insurance reported. 30 to 50 workers lost earnings, and 25 to 30 coopers face direct impact.
