Ice, industry, and winter woes sweep river town
The late grand jury returned 90 indictments while local shops advertise coats hats and school supplies at Henry Brown's and Wilmoth Wilhelm & Co. The ice gorge and frozen river disrupt travel and work as a barge lodges on rocks and saw and planing mills brace for spring. Local gossips note weather drops, fish ground by ice, and a photographer’s after-views of the ice breakup.
Ice Gorge Captivates River Residents at Dusk
Citizens unable to witness last Friday evening’s event missed a rare ice gorge on the river. Between 2 and 3 o'clock the ice shifted, then a mass broke free around 4:15, creating a rising surge that moved from bank to bank. The grand break persisted into the evening, with massive floes, shore-ice build up, and the river finally unblocked after dramatic upheaval. River men call it the most remarkable breakup seen here in 40 days. A ferry-boat and a houseboat were moved safely, and few locals watched the spectacle due to late hour and cold.

Old Fly the War Horse Dies Near Stewartsville
Old Fly, famed war horse owned by George M. Barrett, died last Friday at Barrett’s home two miles northwest of Stewartsville. The mare served in the rebellion with her owner, a 1st Cavalry member, in many sharp fights. She was about 37, long invalid, cared for like an infant.
