Indiana Senate Proposes Bond Payment Bill Amid Debate
In Indianapolis December 5 the Senate reported favorably a bill to pay outstanding canal bonds and set it as special order for tomorrow. Also passed were appropriations for the State Normal School and House of Refuge, plus youth offender age cut from 18 to 16 and Governor salary fixed at 8000. A House joint resolution urged Congress to fund Ohio River improvements. Attorney General warned the State liable for unsurrendered canal bonds and potential bonds in lieu of surrendered ones.

Louisiana election and federal intervention condemned as conquest
The piece denounces postwar Louisiana politics with Greeley and Brown winning by a large majority, while a Liberal state ticket and legislature are seated by Federal force. It claims the carpetbagger faction used a revived board and U.S. troops to seize control, disenfranchise 35,000, and install Kellogg as governor, asking why elections matter. It also mocks succession questions about Grant and Hendricks.
