A Famous Gold Nugget Returns to National Museum
Washington August 24 The Smithsonians collection exhibited at the New Orleans exposition has been moved to the National Museum. A tiny pea sized gold nugget, the first glittering metal seen by James Marshall who found gold in 1849 near Marysville California, is among its treasures. Marshall died last week at an advanced age, poor and misanthropic. His discovery added about 1.5 billion dollars to the world’s gold stock.
