A letter from Ski-a-roox J T Aug 19 reports surviving in the territory after three years. He has lived with the Cherokees, learned their language, attended two war dances, and says he prefers them to circuses. Indians provide food and support, some hire white laborers, and farms improve through leasing and development.

Republicans contest over legislative apportionment plan

Inovavaronis reports that the Republican State committee has stirred a contest to enrow the supreme court’s ruling on the legislative apportionments of 1491 and 1885, aiming to elect the next legislature under the 1879 law. Democrats say they can still count on a safe majority on the ballot despite the decision.

Vernon Jury Lists and Tragic Ohio River Drowning

Vernon Aug 23 report of a drowning in the Ohio River as Edgar Grawham, son of A A Graham, drowned while swimming with friends off a barge. The body was recovered after about thirty minutes but could not be revived. Age about 16 or 17. Jury lists for Grand and Petit juries announced in Vernon, Aug 28.

Camping at the Lake Louisiana Letter Wild Life Tale

A Louisiana letter from Simspero dated August 21 describes a camping trip near a noted lake forty miles away. The writer details camp life and abundant southern wildlife including alligators, gar, turtles, and various fish, with vivid scenes of night sounds and campfires. He recounts dangerous encounters as gar fight alligators and notes heavy wildlife presence in canebrakes and swamps.

Man alleges pearl harvest yields large sum in mussel beds

Cann Itp Aug 22 reports a local fisherman claiming to have gathered over 80 from mussel shells this summer. A pearl found on the lower Wabash reportedly sold for 400 dollars. Aug 23 note: Ex Senator G W Menzies accepts invitation to address Indiana during the campaign.

Hand Smashed and Horse Kick Leave Two Injuries

Stewarreville reports a brakeman William Traut had his left hand mashed while coupling cars yesterday. Three fingers were amputated by the rallesy surgeon. Also a near fatal horse kick incapacitated Ino. Calvein but he is now recovering after bed confinement.

Local council meets as weeds, lamps, and sidewalks are fixed

Regular council session last Tuesday addressed sidewalk upgrades on Tavern street north of East Street, a $2.50 contingent fund, weed control on streets and sidewalks, lamp replacements on Church Street and Main, and deputy appointments for the fair. Church lawn party invites neighbors. readers informed about fair preparations, wheat and well depths, and local business notices.
