A young man James Vanway from Webster County was murdered near the river road after a money dispute. Zach Snyder and accomplices Burnett Campbell and John Anderson confessed. Snyder kept $10 and the others shared loot. Police recovered the weapon and hat. mob threats rise amid citywide tension.
August 18 Princeton Indiana reports major fire losses at Wm Jessop woolen works. 4000 pounds of wool and yarn destroyed. Estimated damage between 15000 and 20000 with no insurance. Other items include rail notes on artesian wells, local races, crops and incidents across Grayville Notre Dame and surrounding counties.
In Curcaggo Inn August 19 a vast grain laden fleet sailed for Lake Huron and Lake Erie. Twenty five propellers and schooners carried 1.5 million bushels of grain, mainly wheat and corn, with many tons of sundries. Vessels of the total daily clearance were triple that number. Tugboats closed in as dawn approached and the harbor showed a panorama of departing craft.
An Illinois man near Mt Vernon was robbed Saturday night while seeking a stray mule he had sold in Posey county. Three road agents attacked after he declined to surrender. $90 taken, the victim walked to town, horse found tied at a tree. Local marshal investigated.
An Iowa Republican and former chairman from Ft Dodge chats on a train near Indianapolis. He predicts Iowa may lean Democratic in the next election, cites German vote loss and temperance zealotry. He notes Dorsey’s Indiana influence and Garfield’s death timing shaping 1880s politics. The meeting ends with a playful misidentification by a State official.
