J. W. French, warden, reports for the north prison a quarter earning of 7007.62 dollars with expenses of 21041.52 and net 28949.14. Convicts fell from 803 to 700, with 87 released and 12 more through pardons deaths or expiration, and 83 new inmates received.
In Jeffersonville Thomas Wright grappled a 100-pound catfish after spotting it near the surface. He struck it with an oar, pulled to the skiff, and was nearly drowned as the fish fought and flipped the boat. Rescuers arrived as Wright surfaced still gripping the fish, and the monster was finally secured after a hard struggle.

Reports from Valparaiso describe a strange water creature seen surface and submerged in the Little Calumet River. Witnesses say it is about a foot long with large finlike structures that propel it, resembling a bird in motion.
