Indianapolis dispatch reports the Democratic State convention delegates largely supported Cleveland for president, with Gray as fallback. Matthews won the governor nomination on the first ballot. Nye for lieutenant governor. Nye and others considered strong, while Shanklin’s bid faltered amid party split. The ticket touts a united, reform-minded slate with proven elector success.
Indiana Democrats nominate a full statewide slate at the state convention in Indianapolis. Key picks include Claude Matthews for Governor, Mortimer Nye for Lieutenant Governor, William R. Myers for Secretary of State, Albery Gall for Treasurer, John O. Sanderson for Auditor, Alonzo G. Smith for Attorney General, Harvey D. Vorhales for Superintendent of Instruction, William A. Peelle for Statistician, Sylvester S. Gorby for Geologist, and a slate of Supreme Court and Appellate judges led by Jeptha D. New and James McCabe with Sydney R. Moon as Supreme Court Reporter.
Henry Bower of Hamilton county grew a cucumber in a bottle in 1854 by letting the vine nourish the fruit until it filled the bottle. After clipping the vine and sealing with alcohol, the cucumber still appears perfect after 33 years. In a separate note, James Cook tried to cross a river at Jeffersonville in a skiff and was run down by a towboat, but escaped by grabbing the steamer and leaping aboard.
In Carmi April 21 the Democratic convention split over nominating the State senator for the 46th district. Regulars renominated Campbell while Norsworthybackers, from White County with visitors from Wabash and Lawrence, claimed about 1,200 votes. The breach unlikely to threaten the seat though it could cost a representative. Hickory Hall forms a permanent Democratic campaign body with all counties represented. A steamer Joe Williams sank six barges carrying 130,000 bushels of coal at the Cairo bridge. The state convention endorsed Palmer for president and ne g ro conventions set for June 4 in Chicago. Illinois sportsmen move to enforce fish laws. Blaine Club seeks another Blaine boom.
Indications point to Gresham securing the Republican nomination while Hill stalls in the presidential race. The Florida Republican party has dissolved and ice continues to disrupt lake navigation.
Washington dispatch notes a split in the Republican party over silver and the force bill, with Teller attacking the measure and hinting that several senators may go independent. Indiana patents and a $19,000,000 House saving dominate the domestic items.
General Baptists plan a two day basket meeting at the fairgrounds May 21 and 22 to raise funds for Harmony church house. Prominent ministers will preach, 25 are to be baptized, and all are invited to enjoy an old-time meeting.
