Gov. Hovey refused signature to abolish the old State board of agriculture and may oppose the new board, which includes notable Marion, Gibson, Knox and other county leaders. The old board demands agricultural funding but the state auditor withholds. Indiana Pots notes Hovey receiving letters about a $750,000 direct tax refund, clarifying that funds belong to the state and will mostly aid benevolent institutions.

Oldest Odd Fellow Honored In Danville Lodge

Danville a April 5 Thomas L Bedford reputedly the world’s oldest Odd Fellow at years of age. He received a jeweled veteran badge by the sovereign grand lodge. A charter member of Philanthropy Lodge No 15 in Philadelphia at 21 he helped establish Ohio Lodge No 1. He joined the local lodge in 1853 and has been an Odd Fellow for 63 years or more. Also notes a local student exhibition at Ovid and a close Evansville election with Democrats and Republicans splitting council seats.

Terrible Death at Madison From Galvanic Battery

George W. Warble, a leading merchant, died after using a galvanic battery for his feet during a Sunday bath. He was not discovered until 8 a.m. the next day, with the room in disarray and the battery broken. An Owensville item notes a Friday accident at Bird's drug-store where a bottle explosion injured a bystander and possibly the eyes of Mr. Bird.

Mrs Frances Leet of Crawfordsville sues Nancy Martins estate for 100. Nancy had hired Leet in 1884 to edit sentimental letters with a wedding payoff. A Fort Wayne dispatch hoax sparked an April fooling by officials. Tales include a clever cat using a latch, a carnival with electric nets, a Bechtler gold dollar pin, a two yolk eggs case, and telegraph writing tested between Crawfordsville and Indianapolis.

Cavern Monster Story Emerges From Indiana Cave Explore

Vernon Indiana April 4. A real estate dealer and a buyer found a deep cavern with glittering stalagmites and stalactites. A six foot hairy creature appeared, snorted, then vanished. Skeleton unearthed in city cellar

Workmen digging a cellar in the eastern city found a well preserved human skeleton. It is unusually large and believed by experts to be the frame of an Indian buried about a century ago. The remains were in a sitting posture with the face toward the south.
