Kindergarten fire safety visit inspires Smokey Bear cosplay
About 66 Shenango East New Castle kindergartners met Smokey Bear when the Shenango Area Fire District visited Friday. Students rode fire trucks around the campus and learned safety tips before rain sent them inside. They wore paper Dalmatian hats and heard a lesson on fire safety and how to call 911. Chief Dave Rishel noted parents often miss basics such as recognizing fire behind a door and directing kids to crawl out during a chimney fire.

Veterans Stand Down invites help for exhausted units and families
Vets are urged to attend the 14th annual Stand Down at Cascade Park Pavilion from noon to 2 30 p m on October 11. Last year about 130 veterans participated and 300 attended with vendors rising from 130 to 300. Co chairwoman Missy Dellaverson Russell says 40 plus vendors are lined up offering medical screenings haircuts hygiene products meals housing options job seeking and other veteran resources.

Recovery fair promotes stronger together theme in county
