The Red Cross appeals for hurricane relief funds while Yankees win the pennant.18 horses set a fair record for Eq Wagner o Volant, and county youths attend an educational farm camp led by Harold McCulloch. Clinton S. Carnes, the Atlanta sought former treasurer of the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board, was arrested in Winnipeg after an amateur detective tracked him from a circulated description. The case centers on alleged embezzlement of about a million dollars. The suspect reportedly will not fight extradition.
Edwin Flick, cashier of the Citizen's Bank of Pleasantville, pleads not guilty to charges of being an accessory to arson, larceny, and burglary in a bank robbery and fire. Sylvia Watson, a Negro, pleads guilty to the same charges and is held in Franklin jail. A steel deposit box with promissory notes was recovered submerged in Oil Creek and found legible after seven feet of water was released. The hearing is set for October 9.

Robert C. Love, prominent business leader and civic figure in New Castle, was chosen general chairman of the Community Chest at a Friday board meeting. He pledged hearty cooperation from agencies and the public and will oversee organization and campaigns this year. Directors express gratification and expect timely appointments of division leaders and committees.

Harrisburg report states the State Highway Department will open bids October 23 and 24 for paving about eighty miles of road including a 53 676 foot section of the Perry Highway through Washington township Lawrence county and Mercer county towns Mercerborough Springfield Findley. The project calls for reinforced concrete pavement and marks one of the department’s longest road schemes of the year.

In Chatham Ontario two Detroit women using aliases admitted perjury to shield a common husband after a fatal crash on a provincial highway near Tilbury. Police say the joint husband rode in the car that struck and killed Mrs. Margaret Schwartz of Buffalo, while the women lied about their car's involvement. Both women pleaded guilty and await sentence as investigators pursue the husband.
Harrisburg Stat 29 The Water and Power Resources Board approved Lawrence County commissioners plan to build a bridge across Neshannock Creek in New Castle. Approval came at the September meeting.
Five people injured in a head on collision on Atlantic Avenue near Etna involving Lews W Fell and Joener. Three seriously hurt transferred to hospitals. two others treated at Shenango Valley hospital. Names and injuries include wrist, cuts, and fractures. Continued on pages two.
The Workmen's Compensation Board dismissed the city of New Castle's appeal in the case of Mrs. M. Belle Emery widow of Emery, a street paving inspector. He died after being struck by a car on July 25, 1927 while inspecting concrete on Lathrop street. The referee's award granting widow compensation was upheld.
