Representatives of England and France arrived amid talks on a new financial move in West Russia. The effort envisions bond issues in denominations as low as 100 dollars. Reports by Frank Charlton note the atmosphere and potential implications for investors and regional stability.
New York pastor Rev A Bedikian cites Armenian deportations and killings by the Turks. He says 800000 Armenians have been killed or displaced, 75000 of military age drafted, and the Armenian nation left deserted with many killed or exiled.
Michael Hromyak aged 58 from Sharon died at Shenango Valley hospital after shooting himself in the right temple on September 20 in an alley near the Fifth ward fire department. He was a shoemaker, unmarried, with a single nephew arranging the funeral. The funeral is set for Friday at 10 30 from St Nicholas Catholic church with burial in St Marys cemetery.
Temperance leaders in the county feel encouraged after last night's News report that Porter and Chambers leaders will unite to back Judge William E. Porter. William McElwee Jr's decision on vote-count concerns ends any doubt about Porter's ticket chances as county commissioners prepare to certify totals to the secretary of the commonwealth.
W. T. Burns first candidate in the recent election to file his expense report at the courthouse. He states campaign costs total 81.25 mainly for advertising and cards. Law requires filing within fifteen days after the primary. those over 50 must itemize expenditures.
Paris dispatch reports Bulgarian Premier Radoslavoff’s government fell and King Ferdinand asked M. Malinoff, pro entente, to form a ministry. The move signals a shift away from Germany toward neutrality aligned with European powers. Members of the cabinet were reappointed, including Toncheff, Pecheff, Boyacieff, Blakoff, Dimcheff, and Apostoloff.
The Allies issue a 500 million dollar five year loan at 5 percent interest with price to investors 98 and underwriters 96. Net yield to investors 5.12 percent. England and France receive 480 million. Total cost to allies 625 million including interest. Bonds from 100 dollars, convertible after five years into French or English bonds maturing 15 to 25 years at 4 12 percent. Security is joint obligation of French and British governments with priority over other debts.
United States secures a billion dollar war loan after formal announcement of the Anglo French credit. The ultimate net value, after premiums and interest, is valued at 355 million dollars. The agreement marks a significant step in wartime financing.
Chicago banks will not participate in the Anglo French loan due to depositor opposition. Bond managers refused to attend a meeting with Baron Reading and commissioners, limiting involvement to bond houses and individual bank officials and directors.
James Rolph Jr. won the San Francisco mayoral race by a decisive margin, defeating Eugene E. Schmitz at the municipal primaries. Schmitz, previously ousted after graft exposures, polled 13,024 to Rolph’s 23,172 votes as the city moves forward with Rolph's administration.
In Wampum Pennsylvania on September 29 judge hopeful Fr L Gray distributed hand bills stating his pledge to jail Slaughter House for supplying liquor to men of intemperate habits if elected justice of the peace. The borough buzzed with talk as Gray’s stance drew attention and others may follow suit.
A worker named Hamilton had $44 stolen from his clothes at Shenango Works of the American Sheet and Tin Plate company. The theft has many workers under suspicion and alarms mine morale as investigators search for the culprit among hundreds of suspects.
Elizabeth Blair Mohr faces murder and assault with intent to kill charges over the death of Dr C Franklin Mohr. Three Black suspects, Healis Brown and Spellman, are indicted similarly. Mohr was shot September 1 between Providence and Newport. bail set at 10000.
Washington September 29 The Grand Army of the Republic survivors who endured Civil War battles march up Pennsylvania Avenue this morning in a grand review saluted by the president. Crowds line sidewalks as flags wave and bands play honoring the Heroic Corps now gray and aged. Confederate veterans sit among the attendees in gray uniforms.
Albert Hoyland a Fifth ward contractor is building a large brick bungalow on Phillips Street near his brother's block. The home will have all modern improvements and be a fine residence.
German losses in Artois and Champagne were officially estimated at 120000 men based on prisoners and wounded and dead found on the field. The allies report terrain gains and that Germans abandoned extended front positions and suffered further losses in killed wounded and missing.
Suffer New York Suffern fire destroys the principal business district, burning more than twenty buildings and several dwellings. One man is believed dead with losses around 125000. High winds drove the blaze from near the Rockland house, attracting outside aid from Paterson, Ridgewood, Spring Valley, Tuxedo, Ramsay and Lawrence, as railroad property and a private car of Mrs. Thomas F. Ryan suffered damage or near-misses.
Official city tally for New Castle nonpartisan offices lists James A. Chambers ahead of William E. Porter by 16 votes in the mayoral race, with Emery leading for judge by a wide margin. Head and Haselton lead in the superior court race, while votes for city controller and council show varied tallies across multiple candidates as return judges finish borough counts. Full results expected by Friday or Saturday.
Sofia Colligio is jailed on murder charges for shooting Domenic Laprasse of Hillsville Pa in Steubenville yesterday. He died from a back wound as he walked away after a quarrel over her living with a brother in law. Colligio claimed she feared personal injury.
