The former First Lady Mamie Eisenhower, who will be 75 on November 14, was queen at a Diamond Jubilee Dinner last night. Attending were lifelong friends including President Nixon and Mrs. Nixon, who honored her at the early birthday event.

Governor Milton Shapp signed a reform bill raising weekly unemployment payments after Oct 1 from 60 to 81 dollars and adding up to 8 dollars more for married claimants with children. The change also extends coverage to 110000 state employees from Jan 1, 1972, with other provisions including a 4200 dollar taxable payroll base and a 30 week maximum eligibility period.
In Youngstown Ohio the 1200 teachers vote to return to class pending a two week court directed negotiation period overseen by Common Pleas Judge Sidney Riglehaupt. The move follows a Mahoning County injunction forcing talks to settle a master contract after a two week deadline.
Sen Sam J Ervin Jr leads a three week Senate constitutional rights subcommittee inquiry into press freedom during crisis. Witnesses include Harding Bancroft of The New York Times and Norman Isaacs of Louisville papers. He defends broad First Amendment protections and mocks government censors.
A hillside mine leak across Union Valley Road caused flood damage to the Moscipan home and yard in Shenango Township. Contractors Graziani and Sons Inc. began cleanup after a missing drainage wall and overextended dirt removal allowed water to wash onto the property.
George Macom the 29 year old executive director resigned at a clinic board meeting effective Oct 15 he joined the staff in 1968 and has headed the clinic since July 1970 He will join Family Guidance Clinic of Mercer County in Sharon The board ratified the hiring of Dr John Blank as the new psychiatrist and cited improvements in MHMR referrals and program development efforts
At a mill under construction for International Paper Co in Atlanta Texas one million gallons of water and debris crushed workers below when a 97 foot high tank burst during a leak test. Six men died and twelve were injured including five from Harold Clements Inc the construction firm. Herman Moore of International Paper offered no cause for the collapse.
Huey Newton of the Black Panther Party crossed the Hong Kong China border with Elaine Brown and Robert Leonard Bay to catch a Canton train, while Newton awaits trial on voluntary manslaughter charges for the 1968 Oakland police shooting of Officer John Frey.
Hiroyuki Ohno, a 16 year old Tokyo cello student, spent 1358 on a London trip to hear Otto Klemperer conduct Brahms Third Symphony at Royal Festival Hall but slept through the concert after a day of sightseeing. He met concert manager David Richardson, missed the performance, and received a baton from Klemperer in a private study. He vowed to return to hear the music live.
