U N General Assembly delegates show solid opposition to any easy peace with North Korea. Non communist delegates oppose encouraging negotiations while U N forces push north toward the 38th parallel.
United Nations General Assembly moves toward a Korea show down with reports of Pyongyang peace feelers. Britain may push a nine nation commission and imply MacArthur authority to cross the 38th parallel if needed. Lester Pearson urged warning to the North Koreans that defeat or ruin awaits. The British plan would permit the commission to operate in Korea to restore law and order with UN help pending a unified government election.
Construction on 5.34 miles of four lane divided highway south of Zelienople will start within ten days to two weeks. Perry highway widening at the Penn Turnpike approaches will occur this year with excavation and drainage. Large Texas Gas line pipe cars pass through the city. Street patching is urged before cold weather and leaves increase debris. Continued on Page Two.

South Korean Air Force pilots dropped welcome leaflets for U S First Cavalry Division troops entering Chongju. The awkward English conveyed clear sentiment thanking the United Nations forces and pledging to fight to drive North Korean forces from the USSR-aligned regime.
Harlan W. Johnson of Wakefield Michigan, one of two U S Army squad members who survived a North Korean guerrilla attack that killed five others, lies wounded at Great Lakes Naval Hospital. Johnson describes a seven man unit with a South Korean interpreter being surprised and slaughtered.

Senate Crime Investigating committee asks the Department of Justice and the FBI for federal assistance in solving the gangland murder of former Chicago policeman William Drury. Sen Kefauver announced the requests to James H. McInerney and Lewis Nichols on the eve of Drury’s scheduled appearance before the panel.
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ordered bail for Steve Nelson a Pittsburgh Communist accused of sedition set at 10000 after he filed a writ of habeas corpus. Nelson was held on a 50000 bond while the state sought to prevent his escape from jurisdiction.
Lt General Walton H. Walker at Eighth Army headquarters declared North Korean troops in a complete rout. He forecast 75 percent of enemy forces annihilated before reaching the 38th parallel and noted UN forces advancing along the Seoul Taejon Pusan corridor to sealing success.
In Taejon Korea on September 28 American bodies were found after retreating North Koreans overran the city. The U S 24th Infantry Division liberated Taejon locating 40 dead soldiers and several South Korean victims. Two GIs posed as dead escaped the massacre.
U. S. troops advancing through central Korea found the bodies of two Americans on a hill near Chongju believed to be airmen. Other corpses were found in the Chongju prison burned to ashes. Communists were believed to have machine-gunned the pair.
U S 24th Division troops recaptured Taejon at 3 30 p m in a bid to avenge a prior defeat. The victory division seized the strategic city from Communist forces, with Maj. Gen. William F Dean previously reported missing in action.
A Reuters dispatch from Seoul quoted an authoritative source that Kim Il Sung ordered North Korean troops to break contact with UN forces and retreat north of the 38th parallel. American intelligence reportedly intercepted the top secret order directing a careful, orderly withdrawal with arms and equipment.
President Truman appointed Robert A. Lovett, former undersecretary of state and New York investment banker, as deputy secretary of defense. Lovett succeeds Stephen T. Early, whose resignation is effective Saturday, reuniting the wartime team from 1940 to 1945 when Lovett held roles as assistant secretary of war and for air.
Vienna reports Communist inspired strikes that drew 70,000 workers from their jobs over Tuesday and Wednesday were halted. Demonstrations against the wage price adjustment scheme stopped, though no official word came from Communist leaders. Rioting in Linz ended after police subdued clashes at the Trade Union building.
