About 2,500 Missouri veterans arrived by motor caravan in Jefferson City to demand a $400 state bonus. They camped at Washington Park baseball diamond after leaving Springfield, led by Marl E. Owen who said they would stay at the governor's mansion doorstep until a bonus law is enacted.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower arrived by air in Frankfurt from England to observe the Nazi war crimes trial verdicts. He serves as chief of the general staff and former Allied supreme commander in the western campaign.
President Truman and Roy L. Thompson of the price decontrol board clashed over how long the nationwide meat shortage will last. John L. Lewis president of the United Mine Workers was reported in fine condition today after an appendectomy at Washington Emergency Hospital. The discharge notes gave no complications and said he is progressing satisfactorily.
In Hammond Indiana three youths Melvin Altgelbers 16 Charles Chick 16 and James Walker 15 were killed when they slept on the Nickel Plate railroad tracks at Colfax avenue. James August 15 said he and the others went to sleep on the tracks and were struck by a freight train early today.
San Antonio counted seven dead and eight missing as flash flood from near record rain battered the city. The San Antonio river surged through the business district Thursday night, flooding three feet deep and causing millions in property damage. By Friday morning waters subsided to near normal levels, with remaining low-lying areas still affected.
Mrs. Rhoda Wenger in a 10 month coma flew from Allentown to California aboard an Army transport hospital plane with her husband Sgt. Leland Wenger and nurse Mrs. Harold Nelson. The baby Karen Beth, born during the coma, weighs nine pounds two ounces. She is to be treated at UC Hospital by brain specialists while Wenger receives leg injury care at Letterman Hospital. The couple were injured in a November automobile crash near Allentown en route to New York. refueling stops included Patterson Field and Topeka before Coast arrival.
Westminster College in New Wilmington begins fall term Tuesday with about 1 300 students, the largest in the college's history. Barracks for 24 married veterans and 48 single veterans are being rushed to completion, with some ready early. Temporary housing for faculty, eight prefabricated houses, will not be ready for weeks. Registration runs Tuesday through Thursday per President H L Cle.
The air ministry ordered a wide search east of Lewes in Sussex for Capt Geof frey de Havilland after his experimental jet plane exploded over the Thames estuary. A Sussex detective reported seeing a parachute nearby shortly before the crash.
Mayor John F. Haven proclaims September 30 to October 5, 1946 as New Castle Child Safety Campaign Period. The notice urges citizens to protect children ages four to fifteen from accidents at home, at play, at school, and on the way to and from school as schools reopen.

In Paris on September 28 a senior American delegate declared the United States will oppose Soviet Russia attaining joint control of the Dardanelles with Turkey. The statement followed Moscow's formal demand for joint military control of the vital gateway between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.
The Moscow radio said representatives of the United States France China Britain and the Soviet Union arrived in Moscow for a five power telecommunication conference to be held with delegates from all six nations.

The 12th annual meeting of the Pennsylvania State Conference of Branches and Youth Council of the NAACP opened Friday night at Second Baptist church in New Castle. Dr. George A Walker presided as state president with about 125 delegates by noon. Rev. K Melvin Taylor led the invocation after the National Anthem, and Edward E Smith Jr of Shenango Y M C A spoke briefly. St Johns choir performed, and Rowena Watkins with Thomas Farrow spoke for New Castle youth.
