German troops close in on Warsaw after a week of bombardment and resistance. The city lies in ruins with half reported damaged by fire and shell. Civilians number at least 3000 killed as Warsaw prepares to surrender under German terms.
A bevy of charming young ladies will receive diplomas of graduation from the New Castle hospital as nurses this evening. They will embark on alleviating human suffering and serving the maimed and ailing. The community offers congratulations to these serious minded young women. United States weather statistics show a daytime high of 70 and low of 52 degrees with 0.35 inches of precipitation and a river stage of 4.2 feet. For the same date last year, highs reached 71 and lows 37 with no precipitation recorded.

After weeks of negotiation the Free Public Library board leased the southwest corner lot at North Jefferson and North streets to Ernest M. Crawford for Penn-Ohio Coach Lines. A 1 2 year lease at 1400 per year grants a travel center to serve all city buses, with possession and construction to begin November 1.
A wave of seasonably cold weather slowed Allied and German operations on the western front. Bitter autumn winds whipped through the Vosges and Saarbruecken vicinity, driving many from lines with grip. A German attack west of Saarbrucken was noted in today’s official communique.

New Castle high school football teams heads to Beaver Falls tonight for their third game of the season under the Midtlights of Geneva stadium. The News will post quarterly progress reports and a telephone update may be scarce before 8:30 p.m. The game was moved from Friday to tonight due to Geneva College schedule conflicts.
The Perry Highway between Dixie Inn and the 422 Ferry intersection near Portersville is formally opened with a three lane stretch. The ceremony begins at 4 PM with ribbon cutting and an inspection, followed by a program at 5 PM led by Dowler of Pittsburgh, president of the Perry Highway Association. Continued on page two.
Berlin claims a Nazi bombing squadron attacked a British heavy cruiser near the Isle of May off the Firth of Forth, penetrating North Sea defenses. Britain rejects the report as false, saying no cruiser was hit and calling it likely a repeat of yesterday’s North Sea claim.
Nine British airmen interned at Raufarhoelen in northern Iceland regained their confiscated plane and escaped their captors. They reportedly flew across the North Sea to England, a brief dispatch from Copenhagen confirms.
In West Palm Beach Florida 29 year old Charles Jefferson was convicted last night of the murder and attacks on Frances Ruth Dunn a 17 year old student at Adams High School The jury verdict leads to a mandatory death penalty with the judge expected to pronounce sentence by week’s end Jefferson posed as a movie talent scout and was found guilty after a six hour deliberation The case continues in New Castle with notes of a senator in Washington and health updates on Carter Glass of Virginia from International News Service.
Lawrence County jury found Walter Tewell Cecil Suber and James Hagan not guilty of assaulting Henry Bell at his Moravia street home. Costs of 150 to 200 dollars were placed on Sak Levine Henry Bell and G J Norman. Judge Braham announced the verdict after 5 p m. Prosecutor Bell and the two named defendants face court on Saturday to pay.
The 1939 American Legion national convention in Chicago named a likely new national commander. Raymond J. Kelly, Detroit corporate counsel, favored to succeed Stephen F.
