Couple finds militiamen's letter in home
Thomas and Helen Snarey of Volant RD 3 discovered a 117 year old Civil War era letter among the estate items of Sam Hettenbaugh. Signed by 32 Volant area residents and dated August 2 1863 it was found in good condition inside an envelope marked Wm McVay pension papers. The note requests release from militia duty and references a camp near Parkersburg West Virginia addressing Capt G C Vincent commander of Co J. The Snareys believe the letter may be a copy of the original and plan to donate it to the county Historical Society.
