Communist forces unleashed about 800 rockets and mortars on two South Vietnamese main force bases in eastern Cambodia and attacked government camps across the border. At least 95 North Vietnamese killed, 15 South Vietnamese dead and 85 wounded. A U.S. UH-1 helicopter was shot down wounding five Americans. Saboteurs hit a large ammunition dump near Saigon, one attacker killed. Heavy fighting centered on Krek, near the border, with 400 rounds at one base and 360 at another. Six South Vietnamese killed, 26 wounded. 11 allied bases attacked. The action coincides with South Vietnam elections and efforts to reopen infiltration routes. Two Americans were killed and 10 wounded in Phnom Penh by homemade grenades at a softball field.
