In Tokyo on September 27, Emperor Hirohito, revered by 80 million, met General Douglas MacArthur at the US Embassy in an unprecedented and unexplained encounter. The meeting arose from Hirohito’s wish to confer with the Allied commander as Japan neared surrender, with Allied officials offering only hints of the talks.
President Truman voiced sharp criticism as Congress rejected his proposal for unemployment compensation of 25 dollars weekly for 26 weeks. Secretary Ross described the exchange with the Ways and Means committee as lively and pointed.

The Office of Price Administration announced that all low grades of beef veal lamb and by products will be removed from the ration list next Sunday. Red points will not be required in October for popular meats and canned items while canned fish items drop two to three points a pound. Government conciliators pressed for a settlement in the oil refinery wage dispute as 30,000 workers already idle and a threatened coast-to-coast strike could halt gasoline supplies across major cities. O A Knight of the Oil Workers International Union CIO led the push for a 30 percent raise amid confusion over a national walkout.
The American flag that flew over Hickman Field during the Pearl Harbor attack will be raised at noon tomorrow at Fifth Air Force headquarters in Tokyo. General George C. Kenney will oversee the ceremony.

Twenty one vessels return from action near the Ryukyus and enemy coast, joining Task Force 38 ships en route from Tokyo Bay via Okinawa. Admiral Halsey aboard USS South Dakota will lead a parade of battleships into San Francisco Bay before Navy Day.
Gen. Stilwell will return to the United States as the U S Tenth Army is disbanded following the Okinawa campaign. The Tenth Army was formed for Okinawa by the late Lt Gen Buckner, who was killed in the battle’s final stages. Stilwell completed the Okinawa task and his units were dispersed to Korea and along the China coast.
Pittsburgh dispatch reports the historic Hawkins mansion in Swissvale was destroyed by fire despite five fire companies arriving to save it. The 16 room house, nearly a century old, left three families homeless as authorities determine day use of the fire.
Three Philadelphians convicted of robbing the mails faced sentencing after a trial found they ripped open 39 airmail pouches last November hampering war production by as much as three months. Postal Inspector Lute testified in Federal Court, and Judge Welsh scheduled sentencing for a later date.
Patrolman William Heavy was beaten and robbed by two men in a tap room. Off duty, Heavy was attacked after buying drinks for the pair, who then took his revolver badge and $54. He is recovering in Allegheny Hospital as police search for the suspects.
Ruth Baxter of Dravesboro alerted police after hearing a rattle at her door. A squad car arrived and found a red headed woodpecker drilling at the kitchen door window, police reported.
In Lawrence County Court this morning three judges conferred on Anthony Condello's habeas corpus petition. Judge Purvis sat with Judges Braham and Lamoree as attorneys for both sides presented arguments seeking denial of bail and maintaining the Commonwealth's case for a first degree charge.
Jack West and Bob Pepperman were sentenced in common pleas court to die in the electric chair for the murder of Joseph B Campbell the retired Erie industrialist. The Williamsport men pleaded guilty to the murder but said they had no intent to kill during the robbery at his summer home near Erie. They were arrested in Williamsport after being traced through a bar of soap taken from a Bay City hotel.
Marshal Zhukov of the Soviet Union has accepted an invitation from President Truman to visit the United States. The White House said he will arrive in New York by air in October and will visit the White House during his stay.
U S Marines steam through the East China Sea to assist in disarming Japanese troops in China. The first peacetime marine landings on the China coast in four years proceed under Vice Admiral Daniel Birney. The peaceful convoy braces for any risk as they approach shore.
The State department plans a claims process for American wartime damages against Germany and Japan. Citizens are advised to withhold claims while the department handles the overload and mail. In a separate note, a Navy pilot from Toledo, Patrick G Griffin, was slightly injured in a crash off Ocean City and rescued.

Washington action reports that Lt. Col. Jones P. S. Devereux received the Navy Cross from Undersecretary of the Navy as he described Wake Island’s defense. Devereux estimated Marine forces destroyed 10 or 11 Japanese ships during the three week battle and condemned the Japanese as treacherous yet denied equal humanity.
The Public Utility Commission authorized alterations at two grade crossings where the railroad crosses Neal Street in New Castle. The plan also improves part of Highway 79 from Grove Street to East Washington Street with an estimated cost of 97,026 for roads and 1,700 for track work, excluding track and roadbed rehab.
Washington says the House Naval Affairs Committee adopted a resolution calling for a postwar navy of at least 1079 warships with auxiliary craft and aircraft. The plan reduces the peak wartime fleet by about 300 ships and sets personnel at 900000 enlisted, 50000 officers, and 10000 marines.
