A flood of bombs killed at least 80 refugees near the Canton Hankow line as 30 Americans narrowly escaped death near the station. The Japanese army predicted a giant offensive like a river breaking its dikes.

Harry Layton aged 54 of 1306 West Washington street died at New Castle hospital from a fractured skull after being struck by Robert Stephenson’s auto while crossing Washington street near the West Washington street bridge. Coroner Potter investigates the incident. Layton’s survivors include two daughters and a son.
Carl E. Crawford of Shenango, Carnegie-Illinois Steel, states Harry R. Gravenstreeter will become assistant to the general superintendent and William P. Lohrman will become acting master mechanic. Gravenstreeter began in 1917, Lohrman since 1919, both building long service histories at the Temple and New Castle plants.
Central Presbyterian marked Homecoming on Sunday September 26 with old members returning and two former ministers in attendance. The church showcased new carpets and decorations while Rev. S M F Nesbitt of Wooster Ohio and Rev A B McCormick of Oil City led morning and evening services.
Harrisburg agents from the department of labor and industry are in the field gathering evidence against employers violating the women’s 44 hour week. The department says employers must obtain copies of the law abstract and hour schedules or face penalties.
General Secretary R L Meerman and staff of the Y M C A will drive to Camp Fred L Rentz for the first official staff meeting of the new season. The staff sessions discuss all phases of the YMCA program here. Weekly sessions occur through fall and winter.

Albert R. Waters Jr., 18, a University of Missouri sophomore, died of a gunshot wound after allegedly expressing desire to “commune with my maker.” Detective Kilpatrick, a freshman, says Waters spoke of the test in a religious discussion, then received a pistol to carry it out. Kilpatrick heard a shot and found Waters on the floor.
At St Pauls church Walter Thomas Hempel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hempel, was ordained into the gospel ministry. He will be installed October 10 as pastor of the First Evangelical Lutheran church of Mc Donald. The service featured bishops and pastors from the Pittsburgh Synod and choirs from St Pauls St Johns and Bethany. A reception followed at the St Pauls parsonage with Rev Stump and Goldner among attendees.
Miss Dorothy Hoover of R F D No 6 was injured when a passing automobile struck her while she alighted from another vehicle near the National Pants company plant on Butler road at 7 35 this morning. She suffered leg bruises and shock and is in Jameson Memorial hospital.
A death list includes Effie A. Hunter 65 of 922 East Washington, John Albert Dufford 65 of Clintonville Pa, Elizabeth Jane Hovis 74 of Harrisville Pa, George D. Farley 70 of 14 West Latton, Sarah A. Wahn 77 of Ellwood City, Jennie Ann White 80 of New Wilmington, Harry Layton 54 of 1306 West Washington, and Walter Abernathy 31 of Grove.

Horace Bowers and Victor Andreoli, Philadelphia gunmen in a $35 holdup, pleaded not guilty to murder as jury selection began in Luzerne County. Trooper John Broski was fatally shot at the Wyoming barracks during the robbery. Andreoli’s arraignment was scheduled after Bowers.
