Bobby Jones led Gene Homans by seven holes after 18 in the final round at Merion as he chased a fourth title this year. Homans fought but Jones built a decisive advantage, bolstering a 12‑title run since 1923 amid a 6,000‑strong gallery.
Special dispatch from Beverly Hills reports Mr. Hoover plans appearances in three or four states with hot races. He will deliver speeches not framed as politics but still viewed as politically sensitive given the Calineva controversy.
The New Castle Chamber of Commerce and Burton Explosives Inc president J. S. The Standard Transportation Company tanker Sylvan Arrow sent radio for help after losing its propeller 150 miles west of Los Angeles. A coast guard cutter and the sister tanker Empire Arrow headed to assist. the Sylvan Arrow sails from Japan in ballast with about 48 crew.
The wreckage of an airplane identified as the craft carrying Willard Parker of Cleveland and William McNulty of Columbus was found ashore near Conneaut Ohio. No bodies were recovered from the wreckage. A Thompson Aeronautical amphibian searched the lake for the missing men after the discovery amid a storm on Lake Erie.
Sydney Sayre, 37, a former Chicago aviator, confessed to killing his 83-year-old father Rockwell Sayre a wealthy realty broker. He blamed a war veterans mind and a supposed romance between his father and the nurse tending his dying mother, and he planned to kill the nurse as well.
A Great Lakes cyclone yesterday claimed eleven_missing persons as two ships sank and two bodies washed ashore. Coast guards searched the lake after a Ludington lifeboat with a crushed bow reached Two Rivers Wisconsin. In Muskegon the stone barge Salovor wreck claimed at least five lives with two survivors Harry Smith and Lyman Nadau. Chester Lane perished from exposure.
A brutal twenty four hour storm on Lake Michigan left seven believed dead as two ships foundered. Salvor crew members remain missing off Muskegon while search efforts continue despite lower winds and high seas.
Police and Armstrong county detectives rushed to Gary Indiana after Constable William Raper was reported detained in connection with the killing of Joseph Conte 38 wealthy soft drink maker. Conte's wife Mrs Jennie Conto questioned as extradition loomed in a case linked to a body found in a woodland area with a shotgun wound.
Louise Miller of Philadelphia was killed in an automobile accident near Youngstown. Her funeral will be held Sunday at two o clock in the home of I B Griffiths 526 West Washington street Interment will follow in Grandview cemetery Beaver Falls Her sisters Mrs C J Lund Miss Frances Miller and Miss Louise were in the car when a left turning driver caused the crash Mrs Lund is hospitalized in Youngstown with a broken leg Frances, of Washington DC, suffered no fracture

Irene Schroeder known as the gun girl and Glenn Dague face a new appeal in the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to stave off execution for the murder of State Highway Patrolman Corporal Brady Paul. The pair previously lost a trial in Lawrence County and now seek review on October 6 alongside 92 other appeals from western Pennsylvania. The docket also includes former Judge Henry G. Wasson appealing disbarment over his handling of Eleanor Davidson’s estate.
W S Wheeler of Pennsylvania Engineering Works announced a Ford Motor Company contract will keep the plant operating through 1931. The deal includes two 600 ton mixers and a 400 ton tilting open hearth furnace to be built in Detroit, described as the largest open hearth furnace in America. The firm also won an English design contract for a Dagenham foundry and will supply equipment for Ford as it scrapped cars at 525 per day.
A new bus service between Pittsburgh and New Castle via Zelienople and Ellwood City will begin Monday. The Harmony Short Line Motor Transportation Co. says the 13 mile route is two hours with four round trips daily. Connections in New Castle link to Youngstown, Sharon, Cleveland and others. Passengers can board at Harmony Station or downtown terminals.
