Seven day old Neshannock Township teachers strike remains at impasse as both sides seek public exposure. Union seeks an average $1,460 raise citing inequities while the district offers $1,105, with state mediator Kadillac arranging next talks.
A mechanical failure at Virginia Electric North Anna reactor No. 1 released xenon gas into the atmosphere, described as a burp. NRC and Vepco said the release was very small and posed no public health danger, but local officials say they were not notified.
Ida Joseph and her dog Zero watched a thief flee from Grace Galleries after an antique dealer displayed a diamond brooch. A chase ensued with gallery owners, a fire chief and aide, and a bicycle rider joining the pursuit. Zero then picked up a small item as Kenneth McCabe, 26, was tackled by Chief Joseph Riccio.

County officials continue to wrestle with the employment and pay status of detective Winifred Barkley as meetings of the board adjourn without resolution. The labor negotiator questioned whether Barkley is currently a county employee after she moved from the public defender’s office to the detective post on July 2, amid union grievances and unresolved resignations. The dispute centers on posting the vacancy and offering positions to other union members, while legal and departmental constraints hinder a simple fix. District Attorney Donald E.
