Eighteen or eighty miners die in a raging underground fire at the Cresswell colliery near Workington England. Eleven survivors are reported and most bodies are found near the mine's water tower after a seven hour blaze. Families gather as officials declare all hope lost for the trapped workers.
United States dismisses Malik replies as old hat and Stockholm propaganda. White says Washington will not meet one on one with the USSR and calls for action over words. Malik's four points include a U N controlled disarmament plan and free East West idea exchange.
Tokyo dispatch reports the Tenth Corps chief of staff announcing United Nations troops have formed a linkup about 34 miles south of Suwon in Korea, signaling rapid movement of forces in the Southeast.

Yongdong, 25 miles northwest of Kumchon, was retaken by 24th Division troops.
A C-54 Skymaster crashed off the Japanese coast after takeoff from a southwest airbase. Estimated 23 of 51 aboard perished. 28 rescued, including a pilot and a nurse. Destination and survivors names not disclosed.
Berlin reports a high ranking East German government source predicts Propaganda Minister Gerhart Eisler will be ousted from the Communist leadership and likely arrested within two months. The informant says he aided party figures facing trials for being too friendly with the West. He may be reassigned to a professorship at Leipzig University.
In Flushing Meadow N Y the United Nations General Assembly approved a 52 to 6 vote to consider the Cominform threats to Greece. The body also voted 56 to 1 to consider the fate of Greek children sent behind the Iron Curtain by Greek Communist guerrillas who kidnapped them.
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that Pittsburgh flower seller Mary Higbee was sane when she left about $85,000 to two New York groups. Relatives had challenged the will claiming she was of unsound mind as she bequeathed $80,000 to the Truth Seeker company and the American Secular Union in New York City.
Mike Togni aged 63 of Clymer was killed in a rock fall at the Clymer mine operated by Clearfield Bituminous Coal Corp in Indiana County Pennsylvania. He died yesterday following the accident at the mine site.
Alfred William Gould aged 64 of R D 1 New Castle was struck by a car driven by G A Jewell of 465 Neshannock Avenue five miles south of the city on Route 88 New Castle Ellwood road at 8 20 p m Monday He suffered a broken neck and multiple fractures and died Coroner Charles E Allen reports State Police and Ellwood City police investigated the incident indicating Gould attempted to cross near the Rose Farm on the Ellwood City road.

B 29s blasted a hydro electric plant in North Korea and reports describe a smoke column rising 8000 feet forming a mushroom shape. Air force spokesmen noted the pilots were puzzled by the sight. The first half ton bomb caused a terrific explosion near Hamhung in a remote mountain area.
