Mrs Ethel M Atkins was found slain in a vacant house near Abington Pennsylvania. Her head battered with a club and a knife driven through her body. The judge will review the notes and decide among first degree murder with the electric chair, first degree murder with life imprisonment, or second degree murder with 10 to 20 years. Dean did not testify, instead relying on two psychiatrists and neighbors to show feebleness.
Reports across the southeast English coast claimed German soldiers’ bodies were found in large numbers and spread tales of an invasion attempt. Official word denied invasion evidence, noting most recovered corpses were German airmen who perished after clashes with RAF aircraft.

An early morning coal stove explosion at the West Pittsburg home of Mr and Mrs Thomas DeMonico injures Mrs DeMonico and their son John while two others escape unhurt. Mrs DeMonico suffers a serious leg cut and is hospitalized in New Castle.
Sept 26 coastal town reports clouds rolling in after bright morning sunshine. The sea remains fairly calm with a slight swell in the straits and a cold northeast wind blowing. The French coast lies hazy beyond the horizon.
Dr William Mather Lewis president of Lafayette College Easton is Pennsylvania selective service director to oversee the first peacetime conscription. Lt Col Benjamin F Evans deputy adjutant general will assist. The post, paid, directs the nationwide draft from state headquarters at the Capitol under Gov James.
Gibraltar reports its worst air raid of the war as French warplanes from Morocco strike the fortress on September 26. Dozens of bombs hit homes and government buildings. about 300 bombs dropped with fierce anti air defenses in action. Five raiders were shot down.
