Allied forces push forward in Champagne as British smash toward St Quentin and Americans gain ground at Metz. Bulgarian retreat continues with Ishtib town captured by Serbians and prisoners report large advance toward Veles along the Salonika railway.
Moses Diedrick a 40 year old Hungarian sweep at Lehigh Portland cement works was killed instantly when struck by a car driven by Ralph Kradel near Cascade park entrance on the East side at about 1 am. Kradel told officials he was coasting downhill when a man stepped from the bushes and the collision occurred. The body lay at White undertaking rooms awaiting arrangements.
The Susan B. Anthony amendment for women’s voting rights reads that the right to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of sex. It was drafted by Susan B. Anthony in 1875 and introduced in January 1887 by Senator Sargent of California.
Clare Vance of New Wilmington John Lewis of Sharon and Clyde Armstrong of New Kensington trained at Plattsburg Camp for S A T C work. A few days before closure they were drafted as second lieutenants and ordered to report for duty. Vance went to Camp Grant Illinois while Armstrong and Lewis went to Camp Zahar Taylor Kentucky. They were surprised by the rapid turn but glad to serve.
After years of effort by the county and city, the Public Service Commission approved the Gardner avenue viaduct project with the stipulation that construction begin after the war. County Commissioners and City Solicitor James A. Gardner received notices this morning, confirming the commission’s approval and a certificate of public convenience. The decision marks a victory for local officials and citizens who pressed for the project amid a dangerous grade railroad condition.
The federal suffrage amendment vote was delayed at least until Saturday to give Senator LaFollette of Wisconsin time to reach Washington and cast his affirmative vote.
Private Joel C. Tate reports an American advance in France with an unusual capture in a machine gun nest. A German fighter aged 72 and a 14 year old boy were taken prisoner as Allied forces push the German line. Tate says the Germans are learning that Americans are a formidable force and expresses pride in aiding the war effort.
Chairman Thomas F. Morehead of the Fourth Liberty Loan committee calls a citizens meeting at his office to plan raising Lawrence county quota of 3 565 100. He cites the Carnegie Steels Homestead works success where 12 000 men and 500 women raised 2 000 000 in under 40 hours and hopes similar results in New Castle mills.
An automobile was driven into a telephone pole at Park avenue and Highland avenue this morning around eight. The pole broke off and fell over the car. The driver escaped serious injury though the front end of the automobile was badly damaged.
In the Helen C. Davis versus Llewellyn Davis divorce case L. M. Uber was appointed as master to hear and record testimony.
British forces advanced toward St Quentin amid battles near Seleney Gricourt and La Bassée with prisoners taken. St Quentin is mined and German HQs have left the city as French and British commands push within about four thousand yards of the town.
Westminster college reports over 100 students already enrolled in the student army training corps with expectations of a large rise before training begins next Monday. An army inspector approved arrangements, and a corps officer is due to arrive. Barracks and meals will be at Hotel McCreary. Gasless Sunday violations in Fayette County total 1,152 cars as police compile owner names.
Draftees in Lawrence county Class I are ordered to assemble at the Lawrence club on Monday September 30 at 7 PM to join a Fourth Liberty Loan parade. All Class I draftees, including non drill participants, must attend as a separate division. Chairman Harry K. Gregory and Drill Master Captain A Martin Graham sign the notice.
Nick Amato faces murder charges after allegedly shooting Dominick Bagato in Ellwood City following a dispute over Mary Marino. Amato claims self defense as Bagato threatened him with a revolver after dating Marino, who had left her husband in Italy. Mary Marino’s relationship with Bagato sparked the conflict leading to the fatal street encounter.
Lawrence county must speed up to meet a ten ton clothing quota for Belgian relief. Donations should go to the nearest school or the central collecting room in the Johnson building, formerly Metzler's store room, to help war stricken Belgians.
The Lawrence county Red Cross division committee for the Liberty Loan parade is chaired by Harry Alexander. Members include John Wallace, Fred L. Rentz, Mrs. H. M. Kirk, Miss Clare Duff, Mrs. C. B. Krause, Mrs. Stella Black, and Mrs. Mary Conti. They meet at Red Cross headquarters this evening at 7 30 to discuss plans.
Paris dispatch reports a new offensive by American and French forces in Champagne beginning at 5 a.m. with Allied troops reinforcing east of Rheims. The Aisne front saw continued German counterattacks while France gained ground east of Lancy and took prisoners.
Satisfactory progress reported today in the Franco American drive along a thirty mile front west of the Meuse. No details yet on depth of advance or German prisoners. The breakthrough would push beyond Verdun and the Argonne toward the Champagne region.

London dispatch reports 45000 Turkish prisoners captured by Gen. Allenby’s British army in Palestine. Turks east of the Jordan are threatened on front, flank and rear, with likely overall capture of forces east of the Jordan. Prior strength estimated at 80000, meaning over half in British advances.
W C Sturgeon of Wampum reports three of his brothers serving abroad. Harry B Sturgeon enlisted in the Marines in March 1916 and is stationed in Hawaii. John BE Sturgeon joined the Infantry in February 1917 and fought in France including Chateau Thierry. Samuel M Sturgeon enlisted in the Ambulance Service on May 1 1918 and is in Italy with American forces.
