Willard A. Winhoven, 61, the oldest inmate on San Quentin Prison's death row, died yesterday in the hospital from heart trouble. He was sentenced to death for a July 19, 1960 bank holdup in Los Angeles where he acted as a messenger. His death reduces the death row count to 95 inmates.
Sunny and cool today with highs in the 60s. Increasing cloudiness tonight brings a chance of showers with lows in the upper 40s to lower 50s. Sunday turns cloudy and warmer with likely showers and highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Lake Erie winds mainly east to southeast 5 to 20 knots, becoming 10 to 15 knots tonight. A full slate of games produced shocks and big scoring. Farrell upset Butler 28-27 in the Midwestern Conference while Mercer routed Mohawk 39-8 in the Tri-County. New Castle rallied past Beaver Falls 28-21 with four second half touchdowns to flip its season. Shenango and Mercer sit tied atop Tri-County, Aliquippa and Hopewell lead the Midwestern.
Justice Hugo L. Black, age 85, died at Bethesda Naval Hospital after a stroke and frail health eight days after retirement from the Supreme Court. A civil liberties champion, Black helped shape First and Fourteenth Amendment rulings and championed broad constitutional protections for all citizens.
