German forces tighten the ring around Leningrad and push into its outskirts in fierce house to house fighting. Moscow radio reports Nazi troops at the gates of Russia’s second city but says they were instantly repelled in that sector.
London reports German forces opened an assault on the Crimea with four mechanized divisions aiming at the Ferekop isthmus. Berlin observers say sea routes and Luftwaffe support shape the advance while drives toward Stalino and Rostov on Don consolidate the southern front. Continued on Page Two.
Berlin reports a major German push on the southern Russian front with heavy fighting. On the Leningrad front German artillery hit ships in the harbor setting a 10,000 ton vessel ablaze. A British CBS pickup notes Moscow denies grasping Lenin grad suburbs. Continued on page two.

O Toole. They join 395 garbage collectors who also returned to work after a one day holiday.

G Hall Roosevelt brother of Mrs. Franklin D Roosevelt died at Walter Reed hospital where he had been a patient since early September He was born in Passy France January 28 1890 and was the son of Elliott Roosevelt a brother of Theodore Roosevelt He graduated from Harvard with high honors in 1914.
Moscow reports successful Soviet counter offensives on the northern and southern fronts and a defeat of a German assault on Murmansk. A new communique says 14 German ships including transports and a Finnish vessel were sunk at sea while several enemy vessels were damaged. Tass notes a small, unsuccessful German air raid on Moscow and Soviet intercepts of a daylight raid.
Six hundred AFL seamen return to 23 ships in six ports as SIU and Sailors Union of the Pacific accept mediation board to settle the war bonus dispute. Ballots for a general strike were sent to locals if Washington talks fail starting Monday. John Hawk says back to work is sensible as the mediation board offers settlement. SIU rejects the maritime commission while it requisitions ships with government crews.

A British CBS broadcast reports hundreds of German troops rushed to the Skoda Arms Works in Czechoslovakia after an explosion killed and wounded many Nazi workers. The same report says another blast hit a power station despite German presence.
FBI agents began gathering evidence to determine the cause of yesterday's massive fire at the Standard Oil refinery in Whiting. One man, John L. Yager, 49, was killed and at least 20 injured as flames destroyed more than 30 storage tanks. Damage is estimated at 100000 dollars while officials say sabotage is not ruled out but unlikely.
Harrisburg predicts David Jamieson of Philadelphia will be appointed state secretary of revenue to replace William J. Hamilton Jr who was fired for political activity. Jamieson heads the Philadelphia 23d ward GOP and runs the state revenue office in that city. Walter Kress acts as secretary and may move to property and supplies, succeeding Roger W. Rowland after his resignation.
London dispatch says Franz Von Papen presented a plan to Turkey offering independence guarantees and territorial gains if Turkey stays neutral in a German Black Sea drive, with full Axis alignment promising Syria Armenia Palestine and Russo Turkish lands.
Salvador Cresce, son of Mr and Mrs Lawrence Cresce of 315 Division Street, recounts five years in Naples Italy studying violin. He notes food shortages rationing coffee is scarce and black market prices. He recalls Naples bombings by the British with minor damage but Brindisi and other Sicilian cities suffered more. A crowd of about 3000, mostly women, roared for the Duke of Windsor and his American born duchess as they arrived by Streamlined train at Union Station Washington. They came from Miami en route to Alberta Canada and will stay until tomorrow morning. The president planned a White House luncheon but was postponed by the death of G Hail Roosevelt, brother of Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt. State officials welcomed them. the Duchess Aunt Bessie Merryman attended.
Warner Brothers president Harry M. Warner testified before a Senate subcommittee, declaring he is bitterly anti Nazi and would follow President Roosevelt. He said he does not know if the U S should go to war and criticized Senator Nye for praising Confessions of a Nazi Spy.
Sen McKellar of Tennessee introduced a bill to repeal the Neutrality Act restricting American merchant ships from the combat zone around the British Isles. He argued the law blocks freedom of seas policy and leaves the U S Atlantic vulnerable to German dominance.
A Reuters dispatch from Shanghai says nine foreign school teachers traveling via the Trans-Siberian railroad saw numerous trainloads of Soviet troops rushed toward the Manchukuo border. The London Daily Express reports 20 ships of the Arctic fleet arriving at Vladivostok to reinforce the Far Eastern fleet.
Berlin reports that German authorities deny a Paris state of siege has been declared. Paris is described as returning to normal life after the 9 p.m. curfew was lifted. Marshal Philippe Petain expressed satisfaction with the German military command allowing a return to normal conditions.
Navy officials probed two crashes near Bay Springs Mississippi and Santa Rosa Peninsula killing six Pensacola air base fliers. Victims in Mississippi were T. O. Carter, Jesse Wilcox, S. Oldaker, and B. B. Barbour. In Florida, Naval Cadet Charles Pilinski of Green Bay and Ensign Donald Utz of Port Washington perished.
