Referendum on 1970 ballot for VietNam veterans bonus expansion
Senate sent Gov. Shafer a 2 million borrowing referendum to appear on the May 17 1970 primary ballot for expanded Vietnam veterans hospitalisation bonuses. The plan adds up to 750 for 25 per month in hospital care and 1000 for beneficiaries who die while hospitalized, supplementing a 26 million existing bonus program. A 42-0 Senate vote approved the conference report.

Children Taken From Mitchell Home in Atlantic Pa
Lawrence County Child Welfare Agency removed two county children from the Mitchell Home for the Retarded in Atlantic and placed one at the Keffer Home near Lancaster and another at the Children’s Rehabilitation Center in Butler. County Commissioner Frank A. Vitril said evaluations will decide institutional or foster placement for each child and that the county will move to remove the remaining four residents. He praised the Butler center as excellent with a sound educational program and noted favorable reports from the Keffer Home caseworker.

Burglaries Hit Local Restaurant School and Ford
Police report burglaries at Hoover's Restaurant on Grove Street and St. Vitus School on Jefferson Street with cash and cigarette machine losses. Cooperation praised at civil defense conference

Tax plan for Patton balifield land by Redevelopment Authority
The Lawrence County Redevelopment Authority will pay taxes on 3.67 acres it is acquiring from the county. Commissioners' Chairman William C Houk faced questions at a Taxpayers League meeting about the parcel known as Patton balifield between Lee and Patterson avenues on the West Side. The authority plans to contract for construction of trailers for public housing on the site, which is currently tax delinquent. Houk said the land is not being sold to the authority. a declaration of taking has been filed and commissioners agreed to move it back onto the tax rolls. Authority executive director William Patterson said taxes are usually exonerated, but this parcel is expected to generate income to cover taxes.

Cyclist Hurt as Motorcyclist Strikes Roadside Broom
A 17 year old cyclist suffered a broken leg when his bike hit a broom swept by a state Highways Department truck in Shenango Township at 8 16 a m. Alvin Heckler of Frew Mill Road RD 6 is listed in satisfactory condition at St. Francis Hospital with a fractured left leg and cuts to the right leg. The truck driver William Mayberry 48 of Wampum RD 1 was sweeping Pa 388 when the collision occurred. The cycle sustained about 150 dollars damage. Elected J Edward Adams named vice president of the Pennsylvania Planning Association, a New Castle consultant and Pennsylvania registered engineer. He hails from Erie and holds a Pardee University degree in civil engineering.

Allentown senator John T. Van Sant, 53, was chosen unopposed as the new Republican majority whip, succeeding the late Albert R. Pechan who died Sept. 11. Van Sant, a 11 year veteran, chairs the Senate Insurance Committee and runs an insurance and public relations business. He served in the Navy during World War II and has two children. D. Elmer Hawbaker of Franklin County was named caucus secretary to replace Van Sant. Hawbaker, 52, chairs the Senate Agriculture Committee and owns a Mercersburg dairy farm. he is married with two children.

DeFelice to head Lawrence County Council in 1970
