TOKYO UPI China and North Viet Nam rejected the latest U S bid to halt the Viet Nam war calling it a peace swindle meant to fool world opinion.
Thirteen Cosa Nostra executives arrested in a Queens restaurant raid were released on $100000 bail each. They face a grand jury next week over three gangland slayings and a power shift within the Mafia. One top figure, Thomas Eboli, was among those freed earlier. ten others remained delayed by paperwork.
Two 23-year-old men from Greensboro Pa. died after their car rear ended a tractor trailer on the Pennsylvania Turnpike while returning from Cleveland Ohio. Driver Thomas A. McIntire was dead at the scene and passenger James H. Helmick died after 4 a.m. at Providence General Hospital. The truck driver, Francis Brower 59, escaped injury. Police say McIntire dozed off as eastbound car hit the trailer 13 miles west of the Gateway Interchange near the Ohio line.

Chicago police say a campaign aide who volunteered for a lie detector test in Valerie Percy death will be retested next week after a two hour session proved inconclusive. The test was one of two given to aides in and out of the Percy home this summer. the other aide reportedly passed. Police say no aide is considered a suspect at this time.
Diplomatic sources say Britain plans a discreet Viet Nam peace initiative next month with George Brown meeting Andréi Gromyko in New York during the UN General Assembly to urge a reconvened 1954 Geneva Conference. Gromyko rejected the latest U S bid at the assembly.

A 400 strong Congolese mob stormed the Portuguese Embassy in Kinshasa injuring Charge d Affaires Ressano Garcia and two other staff. Garcia was beaten and later hospitalized. two employees treated for minor injuries. Firefighters contained blazes as troops cordoned the area. no attack on the nearby American Embassy occurred.

Former Canadian Prime Minister John Diefenbaker denounces a judicial inquiry into his handling of a sex-and-security scandal as a political hatchet job. Judge Spence’s 91 page report rebuked Diefenbaker for keeping Pierre Sevigny in a high security role amid an alleged intimate relationship. Sevigny and Diefenbaker condemned the findings while the investigation blamed past cabinet conduct.
A rocket launched from Wallops Island by American and German scientists released vari colored chemical clouds at 310 and 570 miles altitude. The two immense plumes formed a spectacular display visible across the Eastern United States as far west as Illinois, aiding studies of Earth's magnetic field.
