Detroit leaders of the United Automobile Workers CIO plan to ask Washington for permission to hold strike votes among Chrysler Ford and GM employees. The union filed for a GM vote covering 96 plants and about 25 000 workers with potential wider impact. TOKYO Sept 24 The Imperial palace in Tokyo burned on the night of May 25 destroying the wooden structure and most royal possessions. Fifty palace guards died fighting the flames while Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako escaped unharmed in a nearby building. The two-part palace, housing living quarters and state reception rooms, was completely burned with only white stone steps and a concrete foundation remaining.
Adm William Halsey praised Gen Douglas MacArthur for strong leadership at a luau in Honolulu. He called MacArthur one of the greatest men the United States produced and said he would guarantee Japan never rises above a fourth or fifth rate power if given support, free from bureaucratic interference.
Harrisburg report says the state salvage committee logged 549,784 tons of waste paper in eight months. Last month output reached 70,559 tons with tin can salvage at 765 tons, up from 395 in July as the February 1942 program winds down.
Tokyo dispatch reports Hirohito's household minister Sotaru Ishiwata stating the emperor has no intention of abdicating. He said Hirohito is resolved to lead Japan in peace and to see Potsdam Declaration terms faithfully carried out.

Paris dispatch reports a clear leftward swing in cantonal results with 216 Socialists allied to De Gaulle, 204 radical Socialists, 60 on the Popular Republican Movement, and 55 Communists. Of 371 elected, 732 failed to win a majority and face runoffs next Sunday.

Seven prisoners returned to the United States aboard an ATC transport from India landing at LaGuardia. Among them Captain Lucas Beebe of the 20th Bomber Command, shot down over Singerswold last March, won the Silver Star and Distinguished Service Medal. Also freed were Fred F. Stuns of Princeton West Virginia and Thira sustiwer Herwen of Lekewoo, with the group including two American airmen and four merchant seamen.
