John Gates age 13, son of Mr and Mrs John Gates of 997 Ashland Avenue, was killed by lightning on Sunday afternoon while the brothers were in woods behind their home. Matthew Gates, 12, was stunned but recovered after hanging on until near midnight to reach home and relate the incident. The bolt is believed to have struck between the two, killing John and stunning Matthew, who had iron bolts in his pocket at the time.
