John Taggart assistant superintendent announced No 2 and 3 furnaces at the Carnegie Steel plant will be placed in operation next week likely Wednesday. The mill will resume as soon as furnaces produce, with hundreds of workers to return after months of idleness. Preparations for resumption have been under way for some time.
Grace Lawes a San Francisco divorcee aimed to disfigure Miss Mildred Hanan to keep her from attracting men. Hanan is hospitalized in critical condition. doctors fear peritonitis while autopsy planned for Mrs. Lawes. John S. Borland provided little new light on motive.
San Francisco report says the state grilled Al Semnacher, manager of Virginia Rappe, to confirm his grand jury admissions about Arbuckle the morning after Rappe's party. Semnacher resisted, was deemed a hostile witness, and the questioning shifted to cross examination as the probe continued.
Victor H. Grove files to have Ellwood City First ward ballots thrown out and for Grove to be named Republican burgess nominee based on results from the other three wards. Swick leads Grove 580 563 in unofficial totals. contest hinges on late voting hours and ballot supply.

Large numbers of ex service men are expected at the funeral of William Randolph of Ellwood City. He was a World War soldier to be buried Sunday at 2 30 from the United Presbyterian church. The Ellwood City Post of the American Legion was named for him and the service will be one of the largest in the area with a color draped casket drawn by horses and strict military appointments. Ex service men are urged to attend and efforts are being made to secure automobile transportation.
Failure to heed Mayor Barnes advice led Lew Kelly to a second arrest in two days. Facing the mayor today, he was fined 50 dollars plus costs and sentenced to 60 days in county jail for drunkenness and indecent exposure after a prior lenient admonition yesterday.

Bill Scott a popular horseman and Fair grounds mainstay lies in New Castle hospital after a riding horse threw him on Water street two weeks ago. He suffered a broken leg when the horse became frisky and bolted. Scott could not quiet the animal owned by Sam Clark.

A. L. Carroll of Philadelphia, manager of a Reading brokerage office, was arrested on charges of embezzling over $5,000 from widow Mrs. Merkle by selling bonds entrusted to him to sell.
Judge McLaughry sentenced John Wilson this morning after a liquor selling conviction. He must pay a $100 fine and court costs and serve five months in the Allegheny county work house.
Detroit September 24 Captain Robert G Woodside of Pittsburgh was re elected national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the convention here He won 328 to 213 defeating Colonel Huston of New York City owner of the New York Americans Huston conducted a vigorous campaign for the post.

The body of Private Joseph Jacob of New Castle arrives from New York and funeral services are set for 2:30 PM Monday at the Greek church on South Mill Street. Members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will meet at 1:00 PM Sunday at the city building in full uniform. Jacob served in Company D, 119th Infantry, 80th Division in World War I, with action at Nantillois France on October 10, 1918. He lived at 8 West Reynolds Street and is survived by two brothers, Elias and Tony Jacob.
The Welsh reunion committee, meeting here in July, will gather Sunday at 4:30 PM in the Welsh Congregational church to consider important business.

County commissioners awarded contracts to W. E. Ferry company of Pittsburgh for two small bridges. Jameson’s Run bridge in Plain Grove township bid $3,888 and Front Run bridge in Perry township bid $3,375, the lowest bids.
Two touring cars collided at Etna street and Atlantic avenue shortly after noon. No injuries were reported and the vehicles suffered little damage. One car came from Etna street while the other traveled toward Mahoningtown.

Richard S Blaker 28 marries Helena Blaker 387 in Wheeling W Va believing duty to care for his dead brother’s wife.
