Veterans from Lawrence County travel to Gettysburg for the dedication of a Pennsylvania Civil War monument. Old soldiers recall battles as New Castle contingents join a large reunion and state transportation brings hundreds to the field for the ceremony.
A speaker led an enthusiastic revival event titled Forces That Win addressing essential elements of character success happiness and fulfillment of God's expectations. The program combined revival spirit, music, and a powerful sermon to sway attendees.
Several hundred Youngstown business girls rode a special train to New Castle for a Sunday revival at the tabernacle. Rae Muirhead led them to reserved seats as the choir and audience joined in a grand ovation. Mr Sunday praised the New Castle choir and delivered a powerful talk to about 7,000 listeners. The event marked the largest night of the campaign with more than 75 talks planned in the tabernacle.
Weather data from Ellwood City shows exactly two inches of rain fell overnight, a yearly record. New Castle logged higher total rainfall though not extraordinary, with creeks rising six inches. J W Kirk reports Ellwood measurements and notes conditions vary between towns.
The 97 year old Mrs. Nancy Roberts of Almira Home in New Castle met Evangelist Sunday yesterday. Born and raised in the city, she traveled to the meeting and sat directly behind the speaker, expressing joy at hearing him despite dim vision and hearing.
City Clerk Hugh Marquis and City Controller Lyman Hughes are expected to return today from a two week vacation in Muskegon Michigan. The trip featured extensive fishing and proved very enjoyable with excellent success along this line.
Dr and Mrs Eugene Dunlap of New Castle longtime Siam mission pioneers will get aid as the Presbyterian board sends Rev H W Stewart of Grove City to assist in expanding Christian work in Siam. The Dunlaps left New Castle a year ago after returning from a furlough to raise funds for a new mission station. Marvelous results and a growing awakening accompany efforts while Siamese rulers reportedly view Christianity favorably. Stewart will join the ongoing mission work soon.
A unknown man has appeared in the Sixth ward scaring residents by misbehaving on streets and near homes. He wears a gray cap and light gray coat, weighs 140 to 150 pounds, and covers his face with a handkerchief. Police seek to identify and arrest him. He may be the same man seen in the Seventh ward.
Mayor Harry J. Lusk used Billy Sunday phrases during a police court hearing for Harry Hoagland, accused by his wife of drunken punishment and pursuit in the home. After discussing punishment and urging avoidance of such scenes, the mayor discharged Hoagland.
Mrs George Lloyd of North Beaver township was taken to Shenango Valley hospital Friday in Sut ton's invalid carriage. She is suffering from a cerebral breakdown.
R B Ranney of Neshannock Avenue was a business visitor in Youngstown on Friday.
Hadji Mohammed Jamalia Kiram arrives aboard the St Louis in New York and is greeted by Major Hugh L. Scott. The sultan denies owning pearls worth 100000 dollars and says he did not come for an American wife. He will be a guest of the mayor during his stay.
U S marshals will have served 35 subpoenas for witnesses to Lorimer investigation by sunset today in Chicago. Records of state legislature procedures before Lorimer’s election as senator are being secured as the inquiry opens Monday. Senator Burrows withheld names to prevent early flight. Charles White, D W Holtzlaw, and H J Brickmeyer are expected to be served and have confessed to accepting bribes.
Rev Sunday and several party members plan to attend the M B conference in Niles with an address on Why Some Preachers Fail. Mrs Muirhead spoke to many Y W C A girls at noon. Youngstown Y W C A and Rae Muirhead girls led a large march into the tabernacle.
Health Officer McCandless orders immediate discontinuation of the city jail tonight and vows to enforce the closure. He says the nuisance must be abated now and council inaction over two years ends. Chief Gilmore contemplates handling prisoners elsewhere while councils are asked to act.
Michael Walsh files a lawsuit against Burgess Cunningham of Ellwood City seeking $5,000 for false arrest and imprisonment. Walsh alleges Cunningham arranged a disorderly conduct charge with police involvement after a dispute over smoke from a yard pile, leading to arrest and reputational harm.
Springfield Sept 24 Politicians view Gov Charles S Deneen as the likely successor to U S Senator Shelby M Cullom after the Republican convention dropped Cullom from the platform The aged senator missed the gathering and did not attend or receive commendation His current term ends March 3 1913 and Deneen appears to have complete control of Illinois politics with measures advancing smoothly.
Father Udenbach of St. Ignatius college observatory reports seismograph data showing two simultaneous earthquakes in different regions. The first quake began at 9 38 35 and ended at 10 28 last night with main disturbance at 9 47 30, estimated distance about 3000 miles. a fainter disturbance is also logged but not separable for analysis.
Two new desks will be installed in the postoffice lobby to handle heavy patron traffic. The existing two desks will remain and the additional pair will be five feet long to aid service.
Ambrose Shay of Spring Hill was painfully injured when a knife he used pierced his right hand. He will be unable to work for some time. Lee Taylor has returned from Lowellville where he visited Andrew Kroeck.
Distell claims he was sleeping in his own room when shots were fired at very close range. A revolver was found in a corner of the room.
Mrs Martha Distell 42 and Paul Mueller 35 a mail carrier were found shot to death in her Cleveland Ohio home. The couple were discovered by Distell's husband Lawrence a bank officer. children Irvin 20 Genevie 18 were in other rooms. A 32 calibre revolver with empty chambers was found. Police and relatives recount tense statements as investigators suspect a close proximity firing.
Frank Paglia files a $2,000 damages suit against Dr E A nan and accuses Dr Donnan's chauffeur of careless driving after Paglia, on an ice wagon on South Mill street, was struck from behind. He suffered cuts bruises and a spine injury and incurred $16.20 in medical bills. The Reebels and C E Stanley have just returned from Philadelphia.
Dr. James R. Grant and nurse Mary Messer schmidt are detained on suspicion in the Eva Swan death case. Swan’s body was found buried under a vacant Paso Robles house after being left with notes and a sudden disappearance in April. Police compare the incident to the Crippen case and hunt for a Paso Robles ranchman linked to the girl.
