U.S. forces warn off Iranian hovercraft after mine strike

In the Persian Gulf the U S Navy fired warning shots across the bow of an Iranian hovercraft approaching the frigate Jarrett after U S helicopter gunships struck the Iran Ajr vessel for mines in international waters off Bahrain. Three Iranian crewmen died and 26 were captured. Iran denies armed vessel claim and vows retaliation.

Reagan Shrugs Off Iranian Threats After Naval Strike

President Reagan said he is not worried about retaliation for the fatal U S attack on an Iranian vessel. He blamed Iran for insinuating explosive rhetoric in the Persian Gulf while defending the Monday night strike authorized by law in international waters. Reagan dismissed fears of Iranian retaliation as unfounded.

Youth charged in slaying of Youngstown officer

A 19-year-old, William T. Dawson Jr., is jailed without bond after police say he confessed to fatally shooting Patrolman Paul Durkin in a North Side cruiser. Investigators recovered a .22 handgun and Dawson faces aggravated murder with gun spec, with a possible electric chair sentence if convicted.

Trooper shot on turnpike prompts manhunt in Ohio

Ohio trooper Carl Cardinal was shot twice while stopping a speeding car on the Turnpike in Mahoning County. Durkin, a veteran officer, died later at Northside Medical Center. Three male suspects were being interrogated at the Canfield post. one manhunt suspect remained at large as investigators pursued stolen-property links and a possible confession. Cardinal remained in good condition earlier, with funeral services tentatively set for Friday.

Emily Slams Dominican Republic with 125 MPH Winds

Emily struck Bahia de Ocoa near Santo Domingo with 125 mph winds, killing at least one person and darkening the capital before weakening over Hispaniola. UPI reports the hurricane, which made landfall about 11 p.m. local time, was down to 75 mph by 3 a.m. and expected to weaken to a tropical storm.

Dog racing question vetoed for Nov ballot in Lawrence County

Lawrence County Board of Elections rejected placing a referendum on pari mutuel dog racing for the November 3 ballot citing a 3435 printing cost and potential voter confusion. The measure would not be binding and dog racing is not legal in Pennsylvania.

Tax reform opinions to be accepted by county officials

Public input on local tax reform will be heard at county commissioners meetings over the next two weeks. Sessions are scheduled during weekly meetings on Tuesday and October 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the county Government Center. Commissioner Paul L. Tanner proposed collecting views to share with state Rep. Frank LaGrotta as the Legislature weighs options for local government taxation in a November special session. If response warrants, a night meeting may be held to discuss the issue.
