Hope fades for 87 youths aboard the Pamir as the four mast bark vanishes in 80 mph seas 600 miles off the Azores. 52 cadets with 25 crew aboard, many on first voyage, are feared lost after lifeboats and a liferaft were found empty by a U S air force plane.
Sunny and cooler today with a high around 65 in the northeast and 74 in the southwest. Tonight will be fair and cooler with lows near 38 northeast and 45 southwest. Tuesday brings high in the 60s and a continued cooler pattern. The 24 hour period ending 7 am records a max 75 min 50 precip 0.59 inches rain river at 5.6 feet.

Patricia Nesbit a nine year old girl of 3904 Ellwood Road fractured her left wrist Saturday when she fell while roller skating. She was treated at New Castle Hospital and later released.
A flu outbreak in Michigan threatened to close Port Huron schools, though officials warned no alarm. Saginaw Detroit and Frankenmuth reported respiratory illnesses believed to be Asian flu, as health authorities monitor the wave.

State attorneys general were detained en route from Harrisburg, delaying trials until this afternoon. Deputy AG Frank P. Lawley arrived at the New Castle Airport about 9:45 a.m., 45 minutes after trials were to begin. Judge Lomoree recessed court until 1:30 p.m. First case this afternoon is Edward E. Tucker charged with unlawful collection agency practices.

An on the spot policeman thwarted an attempted burglary at Brewster Co on S Mill St early today. Officers noted rear door tampered with and believe burglars were surprised and fled. Nothing was stolen after further investigation.
Weekend traffic in Pennsylvania caused multiple fatalities as rain slicked highways led to six deaths from Friday evening to Sunday night. An Oregon family crash near Pittsburgh Killzone Interchange claimed five lives. Other victims include Simon Uchrinesko near West Newton and Rev. Paul Walker near Chicora.
The Twin Star Rocket derailed outside Peabody injuring at least 20 people aboard about 78 passengers. Conductor C C Carney was in serious condition. The southbound train from Minneapolis to Houston lost most of its 12 cars, with lines blocked at Peabody and cause not yet known.

Former Imperial Navy leader Soemu Toyoda died of pneumonia in Tokyo. He served as commander in chief of the combined fleet and was navy general staff chief when Japan surrendered in World War II. He was tried and acquitted of war crimes by a U.S. tribunal in 1949.
